The correct way to test it would be to hook it up to a load bank, which can place a full load to what the generator is rated for. You can do that by hiring a generator company to test it for you. You could hook up as many power tools to it as you can get your hands on to see if it is putting out, but it will not match a load bank.

Q:I have a Diesel generator using leroy sommers alternator and which uses intelilite MRS 11 controller , it is 380 V , 50 Hz , yesterday i started having problems , after running the genset for like 12 seconds it shuts down and i get two error msgs the first one is : Shutdown Level for Phase 1 under volts the second error msg is : Shutdown Level for Gen voltage Unbalance .in the first 12 seconds the voltage on 3 phases got no problem and after 12 seconds the generator auto shuts down and i cannot seem the find the problem , any help will be appreciated

As a rule of thumb, the first alarm is the one which triggers the rest, so, concentrate on that one. If you have only one phase with a low voltage alarm, a) there is a short somewhere on that phase. Check the phase currents before shut down. If everything looks ok , probably a generator winding is shorted. b) Check the phase voltages before shut down, if everything looks ok, the relay is faulty, have it checked. -

Solet me get this straight You want to use a heating element to heat the water in a steam locomotive to boil the water and turn the pistons, etc, etc. That's all good. Sothe heater will be electric right? Okso you are going from (power source energy, batteries, combustion engine, etc.) to electric energy(heater) to heat energy (water/steam) That is three different conversions, very inefficient, and actually useless. Heating water is very inefficient. It takes a lot of joules to bring the temperature of liquid water up. Ok, so if the heater is electric, something powers it right? But if you have a generator powering the heatercan't the generator itself just power the train? That's what a diesel locomotive is. Just think of it like a car engine hooked up to a train. Except, most of the time, it's diesel electric, meaning a diesel generator uses heat energy to make mechanical energy which turns a crankshaft which creates electric energy which drives electric motors on the axles of the train. Steam trains are very inefficient. Plus, the large number of systems it would need would require lots of maintenance, and require everyone from plumbers to electricians to mechanics to maintain, lots of money and time. Of course, I don't know what a metal heater is, I assumed all of them are, metal, like the ones used to boil water.

Cheap as possible - go Chinese if you want to use it once a year and don't care if it goes paf at any time. Honda makes some good units if you want quality and back up. You need to add up the power draw of your five normal applications and your 600w lighting load. Add 25% and the unit will be adequate. If your appliances have induction motors you will have to have at least three times the rated power of the motor(s) to get them to start safely. If you need more than 3000 watts of constant power you should consider diesel, for longevity go for slow speed i.e.1500 or 1800 rpm engine speed. Price will range from $400 for a 2500w Chinese thingy up to at least $14,000 for a fully enclosed automatic 12KvA super silenced slow speed diesel unit on a slide. Running costs get high with the bigger petrol units. Inverters are good, but you will still have to generate power some how for the batteries - wind, water, solar, generator etc. Will be more expensive to set up but will be better long term for a cabin or similar.
