- A water-pump has a weep-hole on the bottom of the input shaft that purposely leaks coolant when the sealed bearings have been damaged. You must get it repaired ASAP because when you run out of coolant you'll over-heat @ permanently ruin the engine. Call as many local private mechanics and repair shops for a less expensive price to have a new re-manufactured water-pump installed. *In the mean time call NAPA, Carquest, Advance Auto or Auto Zone and ask for a *closed system 4 pound radiator pressure cap and install it when the engine is stone cold. The reason for doing this is the cooling system will build 4 pounds of pressure instead of 16 pounds. It should leak less and slower with the 4 pound cap. You must refill the radiator when it's cold everyday and keep the plastic coolant recovery bottle 3/4 filled when it's cold eash day also. Most likely someone has not used Dex-Cool antifreeze exclusively in the cooling system. Mixing brands with different formulations of antifreeze will cause a black/brown muddy mess in the cooling system, wipe out a water-pump early.
- Q: Okay, I have a 1982 Suzuki Dt8 that someone gave me. But it will not pump water well, when you reve it it will have a little watter shoot out the water outlit, but heres the thing. if you take the cover off be the shift linkage and run the engin it will pump water through just fine
- I've passed on answering your question a couple times, mainly because I'm not sure exactly what you are asking. So let me ask. In the water does the engine overheat? I'm not sure that what you are looking at isn't the relief hole and not the water discharge, which should be under water. How are you supplying water to your engine? Are you running in a barrel? The water pump should be replaced every 2-3 years, so unless you are going to do it yourself, take it to a shop and explain what you are observing. Taking the cowling off will have no effect on the water pump, so I'm guessing you are looking at the wrong place. P.S. This was a common error with Evinrude small motors back in the 70's and 80's, motors similar to yours. The exhaust fin was just behind the propeller. not higher up the leg
- Q: First the shop put in a heater core, but it was still leaking and overheating. Next they put in a water pump. Went to get it and now it wines really loud and the engine use to purr like a kitten, couldn't even tell it was running, now the engine shakes the whole car and it died one the way home but started again. The shop said the cam positioning needs reset again and on the way back to the shop it died again. So from leaking anti-freeze to now it vibrates, dies and wines really loud ! - Yea, this engine has the water pump that is driven off of the timing Chain, before removing the pump you have to install a holding tool to keep the timing gears synchronized, If the pump is removed first without installing the tool, the camshaft timing will be out of sync. and that's what probably happened. NOTE: This sounds like an unqualified shop to work on vehicles, if they can't trace a coolant leak! The first thing that should have been done is a CO2 test on the cooling system to see if the vehicle has any hidden head gasket issues. (Good luck)

- Q: I have a 2000 Ford Focus with 82k miles on it. The car is leaking coolant intermittently. The radiator was replaced about 3 yrs ago. The car doesn't overheat but when I turn it off I can hear a boiling sound and it smells like something is burning. It's not a strong smell but it's there. The car also idles rough and downright shakes at times. Also, and I know this sounds crazy, when I'm driving it I hear a sort of whooshing noise that sounds like water. Could this be the water pump or something more serious? I'm taking it to the mechanic tomorrow but would like an idea as to what could be wrong.
- She should have not drove it. Sounds like it overheated and seized the engine. Probably cracked the heads or block. This could have coated her a car.

- About 1/2 hour to replace battery and cable end. Water pump about 2 hours if everything comes apart easy. Being 23 years old it could take much longer because of rusted or corroded bolts.

- There is no optimum time. This is dependent on several factors. Assuming you are pumping into a small tank which is pressurized by the inflow of water from the pump (and the pressure also controls the pump) these reasons can be excessive use of water, the air space at the top of your tank has been absorbed into the water over a period of time and the volume of compressed air too small causing the pressure to drop too fast, or you could have leak in your water piping. If there is not enough air space in your tank, the pump will cycle extremely fast. If you don't have a tank, then the above information is incorrect. Good luck.

- Q: A mechanic replaced my timing and other belts on my 2001 Mitsubishi Galant 4 cylinder today but not water pump. He said the water pump looked good. All the other mechanics I talked to told me they had to replace the water pump. This mechanic said the belts were not connected to the water pump in this car and therefore the water pump was ok. - A lot of times, it's done as a preventive measure. The logic behind it is that the water pump is driven by the timing belt so if you are going to be replacing the timing belt ( a time consuming job on many different engines ), you may as well do the water pump at the same time.
