Q:My ex landlord is charging me pro-rated costs to replace the entire carpet. While I don't think the carpet needs to be replaced, they said they couldn't get all the carpet installed before the new tenant moved in that they will replace the carpet upon the exit of the new tenant, whenever that may be. Can the legally do that? They've sent me receipts for the carpet cleaning have deducted the pro-rated amount to replace all the carpet. FYI I moved out the end of June, they sent me estimates the end of July now in January they've just sent me the invoices, I asked, for the work they completed, the new tenant moved in-in August.

They can't charge you for cleaning the carpet and also for replacing the carpet. If the landlord fails to replace the carpet I would sue him for the full amount that he deducted for the replacement. If he didn't replace it he can't charge for replacing it. It should not take more than a day to replace all the carpet in a normal sized apartment. Him telling you that he didn't have the time to replace all the carpet is total bull crap. In California the landlord is required to provide you your security deposit returned or a statement within 21 days after you surrender possession itemizing the reasons he is not returning any part of your deposit and the itemized cost. Also in California the landlord is required by law to give a tenant the opportunity to have a move-out inspection prior to vacating the premises. If he failed to ask you if you wanted an inspection you could be entitled to your entire security deposit to be returned to you.

Q:My mom has had a Karastan rug for 30 years now and it's in gorgeous condition and it has never once shed. It's also wool. I need to purchase one, but I don't like the old fashion designs on the Karastan rugs...does anyone know what other brand rug is equal to a Karastan rug that doesn't shed? I wish Karastan made more modern rugs in wool.

Most new wool rugs will shed as that is there nature. The saleslady is correct in her assumption to a certain degree. Depending on your vacuum cleaner, it could take less than 3 months or it could even take longer. The main thing is not to worry, as there will not be any significant loss of overall weight due to the shedding. Also, if you have pets, keep an eye on them as they will often times mark a wool rug, sometimes on numerous occassions as they sense a competitive animal near by. If you do not have pets your self, be cautious of visiting pets as they will also mark the rug.(when pets mark a rug they use urine).

One of my cats poops on my bed whenever I have people over for dinner. It was an anger issue. I resolved it by placing her full food bowl on the bed when I have company. A couple of possible reasons: 1. Dirty litter box 2. Change in litter type 3. Dogs not giving your cat privacy (cats like their privacy) 4. Odor from last incident is not removed 5. Emotional issue There are some good products to clean the rug that will remove the odor that you can buy at a pet store. Make sure to use it in your washer. A spot remover approach may not work. It will need to soak in it. Place her food bowl on the rug for a few days. Cats are very clean animals and will not eliminate where they eat. Good luck!

Q:What's the purpose of an excercise rug? Does it really keep your horse warmn just on rhe hindquarters? But don't horses usually heat up with work. Can it be used walk,trot canter and too jump? I just want to know the purpose of this.

I use an exercise sheet in the winter when walking out to keep my horse warm as her back is clipped. I use mine for slow work or for warming up when riding as I can remove mine whilst riding as it wraps around the saddle. Generally you wouldn't need it once you start cantering and jumping. The other reason for using one is for visibility. Mine is fluorescent yellow so I use it as high viz gear when hacking out.

Kids love playing with Play Dough. The problem? It can be messy, and it always seems to end up on surfaces that are the hardest to clean...like the carpet. This simple 4 step process will help you remove ground in dough even if it seems that it's there to stay! Step 1 While it's still moist, remove as much of the play dough from the carpet as you can. Avoid stepping on it to prevent it from being ground in to the carpet fibers even more. Step 2 Is there dough that you were unable to get picked up because it's already too stuck to the carpet? Walk away! Leave the dough to dry for several hours (I find that over- night works best). You want the dough to be as dry as possible. Step 3 Using the edge of a spoon, firmly scrape the dough from the carpet. The spoon will not damage the carpet, and it will also loosen the dried dough that is stuck. Step 4 Vacuum the carpet thoroughly. Continue to scrape and vacuum until all of the dough is removed.

About $200. But the carpet MUST pass the pinch test. Pinch the carpet you want with your thumb and forefinger. Try to pull out the pile. Look at your fingers. If there is more than 1 or 2 fibers, do not buy the carpet. You will be cursed with dust, dust, dust, and floating fibers which will coat everything in the house. I have seen very expensive carper that I pinched and came away with 20 or 30 fibers. That junk will never vacuum out! It will be a mess forever.

Q:A bottle of gorilla glue spilt on the carpet (the kind that dries white) I can't get it off without tearing the carpet up...and I live in an apartment. Do I have to rip the carpet out or is there a way of getting it off. If I have to rip the carpet out how do I replace that patch?

Unfortunately Gorilla Glue is a polymer and bonds with nylon carpet fibers. You'll have to cut out a patch of the carpet and replace it. Good luck finding a piece to match unless you take a piece from a closet. If you do that cut the damaged piece out first and lay ti over the replacement piece and CAREFULLY cut an identical patch. Tape in and glue the patch with carpet tape and adhesive. Make sure the pile and pattern match. Good luck.
