- Q:We bought a new white linoleum floor to which we added a couple of bathroom rugs. When I went to pick up the rugs to throw them in the wash, I noticed the floor had yellowed underneath the rug. The stains were same shape of the rugs that covered it. The floor was meant to look like white marble now it looks like yucky yellow snow. How I can get these stains off? - Yep, the backing on the rugs gives off gasses as they oxidize. They are most likely gasses from plastic (hydrocarbon) or PVC (chlorides). It is possible that the discoloration to your floor is permanent. You can try putting some lemon juice on a small area and leave it there to dry. If you see a return to the original color, treat the rest. The other thing is a household ammonia test. Same thing (but open the windows and keep your head away from the product). Since you will now be testing acids and alkalies to see if you can reverse the problem, the only other thing to test is a solvent like white spirits. Do this one last. The rugs will continue to degrade but less than when new. You are right that there should be a warning on these rugs to not place them on certain surfaces but you know manufacturers, put it out to sell and then deny any liability.

- I think you mean Berber carpet. Why don't you simply go to a carpeting warehouse place and see if they have remnants and get them to bind the edges and then lay it down on the good carpet as a large area rug? I did that one place I lived and it worked out quite well. I also went to a place like Bed Bath and Beyond and looked for large area rugs that they have for kids going into dorm rooms and bought two rugs and laid them over my carpet. They were good for several years and when they got bad I rolled them up and threw them away and unrolled some new ones. I think they ran about $30 per rug.

- You can't. A rug doctor is like 30 bucks for a night, not too much if you can save up. But otherwise, there's nothing you can do.

- you must REPLACE the carpet because mold spores are very dangerous to humans/pets. Spray area down with bleach before laying new carpet. Probably from air conditioning unit (cause of leak).

- The carpet can be cut to any size (s) or shape you want. Most all carpet store will have access to binding or a few will do it on site.
