Yes, if you're going to lay new carpet the floor should be cleared of everything from wall to wall. A utility knife works good for cutting it but make sure it's sharp. A hammer and a small crowbar should get the nails out. If you can't get a nail out just pound it into the floor so it doesn't stick up. Or try breaking the head off then take a punch and pound it into the floor. They have a way of working themselves back up with time. Before you lay the new carpet, sweep and mop the floor so you know it's nice and clean.

Q:We have been working out on the carpet in our basement for 6-7 months in the same spot. Now the carpet is rock hard from us working out on it. Is the carpet / padding ruined? Is there something we can do so the carpet doesn't' t get ruined?

You more than likely have crushed the fibers on the carpet. Depending on the type of carpet you may or may not get them to fluff or come back up. The padding also depends on the quality.A decent pad will come back but I m willing to bet it won t and you ve crush that permanently. Only thing to prevent this in the future id to stop working out on the carpet and onto a hard surface. Puttin a hard mat over the carpet will still crush the fibers. Basic carpet can be installed with a pad for around 3$ a s/f .(+-) It can be higher or lower with the quality of the carpet and pad. This based on you getting a 15' wide carpet (thus no seams) for 225 s/f. Thats 675 $ for carpet pad and labor. This generally won t include rip out of whats there now, floor prep ( if needed) , furniture moving and disposal. Remember this can vary with quality of pad and carpet. Depending on how big your house is, it can take about half a day to steam clean wall to wall carpeting. Most companies will be able to work around furniture, but obviously it's better if you can move as much furniture as possible so that the cleaners can clean as much carpet as possible. You'll want to open up your windows after the carpet cleaning has been done to air out your rooms (and with this heat, to quicken up the drying time). If you are talking about cleaning hand made rugs, then cleaning is done off site and you generally have to wait 2-3 weeks for the professional cleaners to return your carpet.

Q:Suppose you want to install carpet in a room that measures 18ft x 20ft. The carpet you want costs $28.50/sq yard and comes only in rolls that are 12 feet wide and at least 100 ft long. If you only allow one seam (where the two pieces of carpet meet), what is the most efficient way to lay carpet and how much will the carpet cost?I keep getting that the total carpet will be = to 44 sq yards, and that will cost $1254, no matter what, you need to spend about $3800 on carpet. So there is no more efficient way to lay the carpet?

carpet area = (18*20)/9 = 40 sq yards and if an exact size was available, would cost $1140 but since you HAVE to buy a roll 12ft x 100 ft , the carpet will cost you $3800, as you have calculated

Brush off the mud and caked hair. I use an old scrub brush. Check that your straps are secure. If there is poop on the rear, you can surface scrub just that area without soaking through or getting the rest of the blanket wet. More importantly, check the wear spots on the horse, at the withers and shoulders where the blanket can create sores.

You could simply use white vinegar in place of carpet shampoo. Your house will smell like salad for a little while but the smell will dissipate. For tough set in stains, spray lemon juice on them, wait about 10 minutes, then use your Bissel to remove the stain. Here's a cleaning tip I use: After cleaning your carpets, wipe the whole area with an old towel or baby blanket. It only takes a few minutes and will greatly speed the drying time and remove any dirt that was not sucked up by your Bissell.
