- Q:I am installing 4.5 x 4.5 porcelain tiles on a drywall kitchen backsplash. Applying Omnigrip mastic using a 1/4 x 3/16 vnotch trowel. The tiles have a waffle grid pattern on the back which is about 1/16 deep. I tested the application of one tile and noticed that the mastic did not fill all the waffle depressions. Are they supposed to be all filled? DO I have to backbutter the tiles? Am I using the correct trowel size? Please help!P.S. What is the purpose of the waffle pattern in the first place?

- I would try a large tile supplier like Dal-Tile or VCT tile. Depending on the size of your project they offer great deals on discontinued tile. I just re-tile 2000SF with 20 x 20 tiles from Dal-Tile and picked it up for $.40 a SF. Since the tile is discontinued be sure to get an extra box or two for future repairs.

- i would not use a torch. It probably could desire to reason any moisture trapped in the back of the tiles to enhance and then it may reason steam that could desire to pop the tiles off. What i could do is circulate to homestead Depot and purchase Krud Kutter. It softens paint and is quite gentle. Spray on wait slightly and scrub the paint off. - Q:Im applying going for a pre apprenticeship next month and I‘m not sure which one to choose from, electrician or wall and floor tiling? I think electrician pays more but you need to be a bit smarter the I am and I‘m afraid I won‘t do well. Or I could just to.. You know tiling not that hard. - Tiling is very hard on your knees and back. I would go for the electrician job. In America heat and air conditioning pays the best by far. Good luck! Let us know what you decide.

I can‘t pretend they have any historic value, or even were particularly well laid, so on balance should I1) Replace with new tiles, perhaps up to a higher standard2) Get a specialist to restore them to something approaching their original stateWhich will cost more, and what would you do?
- My opinion? Replace. I believe you would not be happy with the restoration since they were not laid properly in the first place. Doesn't matter which costs more if. in the end, you are unhappy with the results.
- Q:hi i started a tile job yesterday. i was supposed to pull up the old linoleum tile and put new linoleum yile. the only problem was that the ols tile had been put over older tile without being pulled up. so i chipped away a little at a time and it just seemed like it took a long long time. i have blisters all over my right fingers and hand. i still have a big patch to finish tonight, and if anyone knows how to get this stuff up faster please let me know, thank you
- try a small torch,we used it to get tiles warm it seems to melt glue some. Just be careful gets hot fast.
- Q:Ok my room has asbestos on the vynil tile floor and it‘s in good condition. I‘m trying to put a carpet on top of the floor is it possible without removing the tile? Home Depot wants me to remove it before they install the carpet.
- was your floor installed in the 60s or before? if not chances are it isn't asbestos

- First of all I applaud your thinking of doing an apprenticeship. A tiler once told me that all you need to know about tiling is 'one on top of another, shiny side out' ! If in UK check out your local F.E. College which usually run a full range of courses in the various building trades. If you want an apprenticeship rather than a stand alone course, why not contact a reputable local builder who may take you on and train you on the job together with a college course. Good luck.
- Q:I‘m redoing a sunroom in florida and the floor is in good condition but white textured vinyl floor tile prof laid, I want a cork tile look and wondered if there is a plastic type paint to do the job. It will not get a lot of shoe traffic. TKS.
- You can paint the floor tile with a 100% sucess. However, its going to be an epoxy 2 part floor paint. Here is how to do it. You will need to rent an orbital floor sander to clean and roughen up the surface with 400 grit paper. Then mix the two part epoxy and use an applicator. Im not certain how you'd achieve the cork tile look, but with some expermentation, im sure you could. The Epoxy floor is available in Chicago here at Menards this week for $38 and it covers 250 sq feet on new floor and 500 on 2nd application. The MAB paints also sells a similar material with much more color selections.
- Q:I‘m curious...How are Terra Cotta roof tiles secured to the roof?? It seems that if they were nailed down, the installer would risk the chance of cracking, or shattering the tile..Is there some type of nail set that prohibits driving the fastener too far into the pieces? Obviously, they just don‘t lie there...
- here in the uk we dont use shingles ..not man enough to last ..so we have clay . ncrete ..and terra cotta roof tiles ...no point in putting on a roof covering unless it gonna last at least 100 years ..out roof tiles have hooks at top that sit behind the tile lathe ...most tiles are not actually nailed ..most are every 3 or 5 rows ..i have worked on dozens of roofs where not one was nailed ..the roof angles and tile weight prevent them from moving ..we fix with either galvanised or copper nails
