FAQ

When I moved into my house the ceiling was cracked from the ceiling fan out to the walls in two directions. I don't want to put new wall board up and repairing the crack is not possible according to my Husband. What are some ways to cover the ceiling up?
If the ceiling is still shifting, it will crack again, no matter what you do. If not, then you might be able to fix it with joint compound and drywall tape. I don't know if it's the same, but we recently had a crack going from ceiling to floor. We had a drywall guy come out, who made the crack a little bigger, then remudded and retaped and retextured. (Actually, the problem was that it hadn't been taped the first time.)

Fiberglass is the best. You can either go with batts or loose fill, which is blown in. 14 of loose fill gives you R-38, as does 13 of batts. Hope this helps.
hey. i am moving my room into another room in my house. The only problem with this room is that the ceiling is quite old and one part of it fell off. I need to fix this part that fell off. I think the whole ceiling is plaster i guess but underneath the plaster are these really skinny wood boards with something that looks like cement between them. Can i just do the standard drywall fix with a new drywall piece and some mesh and can i nail the drywall into these boards? I also need to peel ugly wallpaper off too to paint it. If i could just fix this part of the ceiling, things would be great. Oh, the whole is like 3 feet by 2 ft so how much would the drywall be to fix it. i cant get it done by a proffessional because i have no money and my mom will by me the drywall. A lot of help appreciated. thanks.
The thin boards will probably break if nailed into, try using a nail to find the studs in the ceiling. Then make the hole into a square.Drywall isnt very expensive. It comes in a few different thicknesses though 1/4,1/2, 3/4. Measure the depth from the hole to the ceiling to see what thickness you need. Then you can cut the new drywall and screw or nail to studs. When cutting drywall use a razor on the white side to score the lines needed to cut, then you can break it and cut the paper on other side, real easy. If the hole depth is less than 1/4 then you may be able to use drywall compound to cover the area. Just use a putty knife to spread it on and sand it after it dries to make it smooth.
Faced or Unfaced fiberglass? How much might it help with sound reduction? Right now Unfaced R30 fiberglass is just under $10 a batt for aprox 30 sq feet. I'm not sure if that is too much R value for a ceiling or if you can even use unfaced batting If it isn't ok for a basement ceiling then I can get some R13 kraft faced for $40/ 163 sq feet.
Well, the facing is a vapor barrier. If you need one, you need one - and it would go to the warm side in a normal application. But I'm getting the impression that you're more concerned about soundproofing than thermal insulation. If the basement isn't much cooler than the rest of the house, faced or unfaced won't matter. The thicker the insulation, the better the soundproofing.
Hello, our house has a big crack in the ceiling running from on wall to the other ( only about 3 feet cause its a entrance way) and I was wondering if there is anyway to fix it properly? We will be selling the home in a year and don't want it to scare anyone off BUT also don't want to just paint over it ( may get sued for concealing a problem). Any ideas or thoughts? Are we screwed and may have to leave it and the house won't sell as fast?:(
Use a screwdriver, knife, etc. and dig the crack all the way out, clean and apply drywall compound, let dry and put on another coat, sand smooth and paint to match ceiling.
