Q:I have a big rug in my bathroom (Not huge, its about 5' x 3').. it's thick and has a thick rubber back. I don't know how to describe what it's made of, but it's not the usual kind of rug you would find to go around the toilet (with a toilet seat cover to match), it's a more expensive rug and the threads kind of loop up and back in.. lol Does that make sense? You could try washing it by hand in the tub with soap or put it in the gentle cycle of the washing machine, or take it to the cleaners.

If it is still hot in your area , take it outside and wash with a mild soap. The driveway with the lawn hose is the easiest.Find two lawn chairs and place the rug on these chairs, or crates, anything to help the water drain from it after washing. When most of the water is drained, throw it over the fence or line to complete drying. Use some degreaser on the rug while you are washing it. The smoke may have some oils in it . You can also rinse with some fabric softener, just mix in bucket first and pour over rug. Only soapy water will get things really clean,those carpet cleaners just cover smells and don't really get anything clean. I only recommed mild soap because I don't know what your rug is made of, if it is synthytic just use laundry detergent. I wash 20 area carpets every spring out of my home, some or wool, cotton, and mixed , even one silk, I don't have a problem, just make sure it is completely dry before bring it back in. If you can't do these things, go to the grocery and buy fabric spray for oders, they work pretty fair.

A lot of carpet stores sell remnants and will cut to whatever size you want. Typically, you want a minimum of 2 feet smaller than the room all the way around--so it would be 7x8 for you. However, maybe you don't want to center the rug in the room--you might not want to have carpet under your bed as most college students use the bedrisers and underneath the bed for storage (things will slide out easier with no rug). You might consider a standard 5x7--The Home Depot usually sells bound berber and other other area rugs this time of year for dorm rooms and they are cheap. Check out their remnants also--it is easy to cut the carpet yourself to size if you buy a carpet knife there.

when you say rugs i assume you mean throw rugs and not carpeting. throw rugs can be taken to the car wash and sprayed off then vacuumed there or with a shop vac. let them dry outside on a clothes line or over a fence. the high pressure soap, then high pressure rense does a great job of getting them clean. if carpet is the issue rent a machine or call a company that cleans carpet
