- Q:Can ceramic tile be applied over my existing formica counter tops? They are in good shape, just ugly. They are not molded, but the formica is not loose anywhere and would probably be hard to remove. Anyone have any experience with this sort of project?
- I would opt to remove the old counter top and replace it. You can prepare the surface for tile but those grout lines are what bug me they get dirty because food and debris gets caught and its hard to clean them nothing like a smooth surface.
- Q:12x12 tiles, what size trowel do i use and how far apart do i space tiles?
- For a standard tile (such as most 12x12) the use of a 1/4x3/8 ths square notched trowel. 99.9% of all 12x12 will require a sanded grout,NEVER an unsanded grout. This has to do with both tile thick ness , water absorption, tile body hardness and grout line size. You shouldn t use a grout line less than 3/16 any way for this size tiles. - No vinegar will not hurt your ceramic tile. You may want to rinse it off if you use to much vinegar.

- Q:I live in Tennessee near nashville, I want to recarpet and ceramic tile in my house but want an estimated cost, of how much so i dont get jipped It‘s a 2,000 sq ft house and.. its two bath one kitchen for tile and three bedroom and living room and hallway for carpet.. anyone know where i can get help i dont want to overpay at all! also empire company has anyone ever done business with them? know if they are good at all///?
- go to a warehouse, low overhead type of place, not a fancy flooring store. ask the sales person if the price on the tag is his best offer. they have some wiggle room in the prices.
- Q:I am looking at purchasing a home but on the disclosure form from the seller, it shows that there is asbetos tiles on the basement floor.I know asbetos is a problem but in this case how much would it cost to remove it? should this be a deal breaker?
- Asbestos floor tiles aren't a health hazard as long as you don't try to remove them. The best way to prevent any possibility of a problem is to cover them with another floor covering. Follow Up: Asbestos based floor tiles were manufactured as late as the 1970's, and existing supplies were allowed to be installed into the early 1980's. Lead paint wasn't an issue then, and asbestos pipe insulation wasn't either. It would depend on the age of the house, but if disclosure noted the tiles and nothing else, it is unlikely there is a problem. Real Estate agents are under considerable liability if they fail to disclose such things. I know because I used to do C of O repairs for a Real Estate agency.
- Q:I have thinset my slate tiles in place, and washed any thin set off as best as I can with water. I can‘t seem to get some of the thinset marks off, how important is this? Also, how long should I let the tiles dry before I can seal them? (I want to seal before grouting). One last thing, my sealer product says to grout 2 hours after sealing? This seems fast...will the sealer be dry enough?
- Ideally you could have sealed your slate before setting (as long as you kept the sealer off the edges of the tiles). This would have made thinset and grout clean-up much easier. You really need to get all the thinset off your tiles. At this point you might need some hot water, a scrungy pad and some elbow grease. If that doesn't do it then you'll need to use a cleaning solution - maybe they have something where you bought the slate (make sure it's safe for natural stone). So after the tiles are thinset free, you can seal - again only the tops of the tile. If sealer gets down the sides your grout will not grab hold as well. Apply enough sealer to coat, but avoid puddling. You can grout after 2 hrs - but you can wait longer if you like. I would seal your grout after it dries as well. Hope this helped... Rich

Generally speaking, the lower the water absorption of tiles, the better the tiles, the higher the product strength, wear resistance and gloss performance is better, the product is not prone to cracking or peeling. And high water absorption of the tiles after the thermal expansion and contraction will lead to tile surface cracks and the overall tile peeling, especially in the choice of toilet paving tiles more attention to this problem. To determine the size of the water absorption also has a simple method, the water absorption rate, also known as seepage rate, the simplest test method is to drop some water on the tile to do the experiment, after a few minutes, wipe the tile surface of the water, if not left any Traces, to prove that the water absorption of tiles is very low. If you leave the water mark tiles discoloration, then the ceramic tile water absorption is higher.
- Q:for diferent size tiles are there standard grout joint sizes
- It depends on the size of your tile. A lot of 4.25 inch tiles have spacers built in. When you put the tiles in it will give you a 1/8 in gap for you grout. I use 1/4 inch spacers when installing 12 inch tiles.
- Q:I recently removed some old tile in my kitchen that was bound to the floor with adhesive. I‘d like to either remove the adhesive or make that area of the floor level in order to place some stick tile.What is the best solution for this? Do I need a sealant? Should I chip up the old adhesive and then seal the floor?Thanks!
- its probably easierto lay down a thin underlayment such as luan or you can get a glue remover which is lots of work a quarter or 8th in floor board is simplest
