- Q:I have a new bathtub with Durock cement board installed around it and I‘m ready for tile. I just got a guy out to give me an estimate for doing the tile work around the tub and he said the Durock would have to be primed first. I‘ve heard you‘re supposed to put the tile directly on the Durock, not paint it. Now I don‘t know what to do. Is he wrong? If he‘s wrong, do I hire someone else or just question him? He did another (non-tile related) job for me and did an excellent job, so I trust him, but I‘m nervous about this. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks!
- Do NOT prime cement board before tiling. The whole reason is to bond to the cement substance of the Durock or cement board. There are times or situations that you need to water proof cement board , but that would be a different situation. I would consider hiring some one else. - you need to remove the old grout on the surface and re apply new grout to fix the problem, you can even get grout that is tinted to the colour that you like .
- Q:We are trying to sell our house so I‘m not interested in professionalism...just something that works and looks decent. We have a small full bathroom that has some tile coming off one of the walls. Looking at it, it seems the entire wall of tile is ready to come down. I need to fix this economically and I‘m assuming I need to do the entire wall. Any ideas how I should go about this? Are there large sheets of tile I can just stick up there? - Q:how to tile vanity top and back splash?
- No you don t have to, since this is really classified as a non wet area. I know you ll splash some water there but the basic tile will take care of that. You won t hurt a thing replacing the sheet rock with it but you don t need to. To tile a vanity top, secure ( glue and screw) 3/4 ply or 2 -1/2 ( cross the ply graining for strength ) ply to the counter top. Properly thinset and nail down (or screw down)1/2 cement board to the ply with proper length galvanized nails or screws. Thin set down your tile and grout after 24 hrs. Then re set you plumbing. I ve done a couple 100 over the years and not 1 failure going over the dry wall in this type of non wet area.. Wet areas such as tubs and showers I ve always used a cement backer board .. - Q:It‘s something I really want to do, I find myself longing for it often. Tile or ceramic, not sure yet. But, my house is 1485 square feet and I‘m wondering if anyone has a ball park estimate for what price range I‘m looking at! - You can count on paying $7 to $12 a square foot depending on material. Thats just basic flooring, if you want anything high end, then expect to pay more accordingly
- Q:Hi, I`m planning a bathroom remodel soon, and I want to use the same floor tiles as before - they are beautiful! But I just can`t find them anywhere (we bought this house recently and the previous owner did the remodel, and we can`t get hold of him any more). If anyone recognizes them, I`d be really grateful if you could point me in the direction of where to find them. Thank you SO much!Further info: the tiles are a fraction under 4 square and are a kind of gray-based quartz or granite (not sure of the difference, sorry!) with flecks of aquamarine and blue that give it an overall pale blue hue. They sit between plain white tiles with the corners shaped to accept the smaller blue squares.I`ve looked in Lowes, Home Depot, Amazon and online but so far no luck :( !
- You will have to contact a company and request a catalog of their tiles that they manufacture. After a run of tiles are made the next run will not be the exact same to match. It's very possible that no manufacturing tile company is still making the tile. With the wear and glaze that the tile has it would be impossible to get a match. I suggest that you shop for tiles that will enhance and blend with what you have and you may even use hard wood and tile aquamarine color that will pull the color hue from your present tile. - Home decoration to buy tiles in general to buy the principle is: a look, two listen, three drops of water, four feet. First, look at the appearance. - Q:We just bought a house and the bathroom tile looks terrible. Its not in bad shape, I just dont like the ugly floral pattern. Since we had to spend a lot of money on other projects in the house we dont have a lot to spend on re-tiling, The bathroom is small, about 5ftx4ft of floor, so I thought peelstick would be a good option. The tiles currently on the floor are peel and stick, should I remove them all before I apply the new ones? or can I just give them a good cleaning and lay the new tiles over them?
- If the old tiles are not embossed, you can put down new peel n stick with no need to remove the old ones. If they are embossed, you might want to sand the pattern down or pour on a leveler. And I've had peel n stick in both bathrooms for almost 20 years, and they still look as good as new. They were installed over asphalt tiles.
- Q:I‘m trying to re-tile two small bathrooms. One is ~20 sf. The other is ~35 sf. I already have the tile, don‘t want any special designs, and have normal rectangular shaped bathrooms with a toilet on one wall (i.e. very few weird cuts). There is already tile on the floors that will have to be taken up. How much should I expect to pay to get someone to install it?
- I don't know where your from and prices varies Tilers charge per square yard. find out with your measurements what the square yard is. be it.. 20 , 25 i don't know. then ring a tiler and ask him how much they charge per square yard. multiply their answer with your answer. that's your price. in Ireland it's 15 per s yard so...... (10 sy X 15 = 150) remember when measuring that you subtract the windows and doors as tilers should not include this in price. also count your bags of adhesive as tilers steal the left over stuff thats not needed. I know this because I am one.

- Leave them alone. The best you could do with ceiling tiles in any case would be to vacuum them; ceiling tiles don't like moisture so you can't attack them with any kind of wet cleaning agents and expect to get away with undamaged tiles. Look around and see how often you see anyone ever treating ceilings. Bacterial threat from ceilings is effectively zero: the only things that ever get there have to be airborne in which case the ceiling is the least of your worries, and you don't ever touch them anyway. Anything that lands on and sticks to the tiles will dry out very shortly, it's a ridiculously inhospitable environment for life, bacterial or otherwise.
