- Q: i need to lcut a circle 36x36 inch on floor tile thats about 1/2 inch thick. can dremel cut this? thanks
- Depends on the exact type of tile. Some porcelain and other hard bodied tile you ll burn the bits and possible the motor itself. If it was a smaller area you had to cut out, it would possible work. - Q: We‘re renovating an old house, and the ceramic tile on the bathroom walls is just awful. I‘d like to replace the wall tile with beadboard. The tiles appear to be mortared directly onto the drywall. Is it a good idea to install the beadboard directly over the ceramic tile? Or should we chip of the tile or remove the lower portion of the drywall? I‘d like to do this as easily as possible, but not at the risk of shoddy workmanship.Also - all the beadboards I‘ve looked at are either painted or primed on the front surface, with a bare wood surface on the rear (glued to the wall). Is it advisable to paint/prime the rear surface as well before installation? With all the steam and moisture in a bathroom, I can envision the panels buckling. Is there a particular paint/primer that seals off from moisture particularly well?
- Do the tiles look awful because some are missing, cracked or what? The reason I ask is because, there are companies who can come in and change the color of your tiles and renew the grout--which is a lot simpler than trying to pull them down or covering them with wood. If you cover them with wood there will be many airspaces between the wood and tile that can collect moisture which leads to mold--I don't think you want to do that. So, if the tile is in good shape, why not contact a company that refinishes and ask for an estimate? My best friend had aqua and black in one of her bathrooms and pink and gray in the other, when she bought her fixer upper house. She had the tiles refinished and I was so amazed at the results! She has lived in the place 9 years and the tiles still look like brand new.
- Q: I have just had a room tiled with porcelain tiles. They are non-shiny matte tiles and it was suggested to me that i should use a sealer. What sealer would be better to use, a water based or solvent based? What are the differences between using the two?
- Penetrating sealer.. Although a water based product, a couple of coats will last years. Mist on( w/ a spray bottle) wipe it thoroughly over the tile and grout with a damp cloth. I dampen a cloth with the sealer. Let set for 10/15 minutes and wipe excess off amd dry. Don t let it puddle and dry. Repeat at least once , twice if possible. The grout must be set for a minimum of 3 days with all the excess grout has all cleaned off. I ve have only used 2 brands over the years Cerama Seal and Miricle 511. - Q: I am having carpet professionally install, but would like to tile my dinning area. Should I install the tiles first? And how should I leave the transition area of the tile?
- I have installed floors professionally for 20 years and tile floors should always be done before carpet if the two are to be transitioned. The reason is that carpet will butt up against the tile, and if you want a good stretch without having the installer make extra visits you will want the tile to be set and preferably grouted first. - No....it's not porous so there is nothing for the paint to stick to.

- Self stick tiles commonly loosen from subfloors, concrete or wood. They can be installed successfully over concrete but it is absolutely vital that your concrete be smooth and very, very clean. If you are concerned about adhesion it would be wiser to use glue down vinyl tiles which aren't much more expensive, rather than build a very expensive wooden subfloor which wouldn't guarantee the integrity of peel and stick tiles.

- Chipboard is not a suitable underlay for tile. Check the bag of mortar for acceptable substrates, at the very minimum you will need a tile backer. If there is any deflection in the chipboard I would recommend putting plywood down before using tile backer. Remember that tile backers don't add much strength as far as flexing is concerned, they are used so the underlayment has a similar expansion and contraction rate as the tile itself. Wood will not give you this and cracks will develop over time.

- I would shop around for price, because the more prettier the tile the more expensive it gets. Your options are variable. You can lay down linoleum too that offers a great look. Less mess and elegant quality looks. If you have your mind made up on tile you will have fun doing it. I've done several bathroom floors. Removing the old tile is a bummer and messy. You have to remove the toilet as well. Then clean it up and stick down your new tile and chip it good around the toliet drain. Then grouting it is fun. Put your toilet back and bolt it down. always replace the wax ring if you pull that toilet and use two of them. This way you will never , never have to pull that toilet again for leaks. Try Lowes and see what they carry on for tile. Shop around and if you have to leave the town and try other towns especially small towns where sales are down and prices are down. Small towns don;t do much business and will offer a great linf of tile cheaper than Lowes or any other outlet. Look up carpet chains and chekc with them also. They carry a good line of tile cheap.
