- Q:We are trying to sell our house so I‘m not interested in professionalism...just something that works and looks decent. We have a small full bathroom that has some tile coming off one of the walls. Looking at it, it seems the entire wall of tile is ready to come down. I need to fix this economically and I‘m assuming I need to do the entire wall. Any ideas how I should go about this? Are there large sheets of tile I can just stick up there? Do I need tile board (if that‘s even a real thing), etc...? Thanks all!
- tiling a tub /shower surround can be difficult, would recommend hiring a tile guy, just watch them and you will learn alot If you walls are not level and square it can be a hard job to do even with experience If you are still going to try it yourself you have to keep in mind the expense, time and purchase or rental of a wet tile saw (plus snips and a grinder with a diamond cut wheel) Use a good adhesive (mastif) and a 3/8 trowel, keep the tile up at least 1/4' from the edge of your tub Don't forget the schulter strip for the edges You can also mix the grout half and half (sanded and non- sanded), just a little helpful hint Going to Home Depot to get a book is not a bad idea, better yet find out when they are going to do a tiling show, you can learn enough to get by if you ask alot of questions Good luck!
- Q:Some red nail polish was spilled on my tile bathroom floor. What can I use to remove it? Nail polish remover would be an obvious choice, but it only removes the glob of polish and not the color. Any suggestions?
- Tile comes many different ways. Is it natural stone like travertine or slate? It could also be ceramic or porcelain. Each product holds up differently. In any event, I hope it's a sealed or glazed product. If it doesn't have a glaze and is still porous, you're not getting the polish out. If the tile has a texture, you won't be able to scrape anything out either. Bleach won't help. I'm afraid that if the nail polish remover doesn't get it out, it may be permanent. The only thought I can offer is to get more of the same color grout that was used between the tiles. If your tile is porous or isn't smooth, there may already be grout on the surface of the tile. Regrouting the tile may help hide the nail polish. Sorry!

- I don't think you should use more glue but they will need to be weighed down i.e. a roller like the type used for linoleum. or something flat and heavy

- A friend of mine installed a new layer of tiles atop the existing floor tiles about three years ago. - A slate tile sounds great, I never thought of that. But grout is a terrible idea! It's chemical. Animals, esp. small ones with heat mats lamps, cannot be around chemicals like that. You're not even supposed to clean their cages with a sponge because of minor chemicals-they're very sensitive. There is no guide because that's a jerry rigged solution that isn't good for animals. And anyways if you grouted the tile in, you wouldn't be able to clean the cage good enough.
- Q:Following on from my previous question about tiles... I had asked if it's better to remove them or tile over the top. At that time, I thought they were bedded in the same stuff as the bathroom tiles were upstairs which was a very fine and compacted sandy stuff that was not set.However, after trying to remove a couple of the mosaic floor tiles in the kitchen, it seems they are bedded in the actual concrete floor itself !!! and instead of being able to remove them, it just chips the tile and breaks off the surface somewhat. They're extremely difficult to remove so: Will my new tiles be completely ok if set on top of these? can you please let me know how to prepare them and what to look out for?Height-wise it doesn't matter, I'll simply order shorter doors. I'm really concerned about the long term strength because it's a kitchen that will get a lot of use / humidity/ etc...Thank you
- You may be able to do it as the last guy answered, but I would never guarantee the results in the long run. The proper way is to chip up all the old tile and start from scratch.

- Your best answer will be on the tile boxes or on the bags of thinset. Generally you need a 1' subfloor, 1 1/4 being better. Most tile setters like small grout lines with this type of tile using toothpicks as spacers. Using the latex admix will help with expansion and contraction cracking. Keep the installation area well above freezing before, during and until cured, also do not let it get excessively low in humidity, as this will cause cracking from drying too fast. Always work your way out of an area, to avoid walking on freshly laid tile. Every so often pick up a just laid tile and check for 90%+ coverage of adhesive. Try to avoid getting any thinset on the face of the tile, as it may stain it. Use non sanded grout. If you have any specific questions, email me
