- Seriously bid is way too high especially if you did some of the work yourself...the paper you lay on the floor is cheap and tile is not that pricey for such a small area..even a master tile layer wont cost that much it can be done in under a day of work by one guy

- Without seeing the wall it's difficult to say. With an uneven surface like brick it would probably take too much thinset to be stable. To do properly, the bricks either need to be removed, or covered over. You could apply concrete to the wall, but that would be hard to finish smoothly if you're not a pro. You could erect a wall out of wood as a facing and tile over that. If you put up a wall it needs to be substantial to support the weight of the tile.

- If you are just concerned about removing the tiles, and don't care if they are damaged during the removal, then chisel and hammer would work. However! If you are trying to keep those old tiles in tact, it's a much more difficult process. Secondly, you said the walls were plaster (and lathe behind that?) Once those walls are compromised, it's a lot of work to re-plaster. Other options: 1. Call a company who resurfaces old tiles with another colored ceramic coating, 2) Cut out those sections of walls and install other materials, like granite, abbatibi (sp?) , fiberglass sections, or 3) pull down the old walls, put up new greenboard and re-tile with the tiles of your choice. If you want an excellent result, I'd go with the third choice, but it is A LOT of work. A few weeks if you are working part time and really know what you are doing. If it's not really important to have it last for say, more than 7 years, I'd just have a company re-coat the tile. It'll take them 1-4 days and will cost equal to or less than the other options. Good Luck! It' an ambitious project.

I was told to paint the wall w/paint primer first then use tile adhesive rather than tile mastic to apply tiles on damaged green board around my jaccuzzi tub for a quick fix. The green paper peeled off when removing the old tile exposing the brown cardboard stuff.
- tile mastic is usually a dry powder and you add water to it. tile adhesive is a premix that's like peanut butter that you could apply to the wall or the tile. The primer is to help glue the paper back one the gypsum. Then when you put the adhesive on, it'll stick longer. If you get the grout and adhesive mix, then you won't have to grout later, and I use it a lot in doing quick fixes. Comes in different colors and I use the unsanded cause it doesn't have to have much space between tiles to work. Put enough on the back of the tile along the edges so it oozes out. Good luck
