- Q: I acquired a huge area rug from someone who was giving it away, they said I just have to steam clean it. Well the thing smells beyond belief and we've already used a whole bottle of Bissel cleaner solution. Do you think t will come clean if I take it outside tomorrow and spray it off with a hose and some vinegar and let the sun do the rest? - Stop Carpet Odors To remove odors from carpet, you should take a box of baking soda and spread it all over the floor. Leave it there overnight and then vacuum the floor the next day. You’ll then have a fresh smelling and aromatic floor. For really tough odors, you may have to steam the floor first and then use the above mentioned baking soda treatment. You may also want to cover the rug with cedar shavings that you get at a pet store, really rub them in to absorb the odor, then shake off the excess and vaccumm after that. Vinegar can discolor so be careful, but if all else fails try a bubbly mix of vinegar and baking soda. I hate to say though, it may be a lost cause.

- Firstly i dont know how they can justify selling them to you, they sound tight. A carpet has a five year life span,(this is a general guideline) so i would find out how long they have been in there, and they cannot charge you for this time while they have been in there as you were not occupying the property, and they cannot expect you to pay the same amount as it would for you to recarpet the whole property. say they have been in thier three years, this would mean the carpets have a two year life left. i suggest going to a carpet shop with the measurements and getting a quote and then divide that by five, and if they have been in there 3 years offer them 2/5ths of the price the carpet shop quote you. the reason i am saying do it like this is because i work in a letting/estate agents, and this is how we resolve issues with security deposits if the landlord wants to claim for carpet damages. - sounds as if something has cloged up the vacume. sit down and take the machine apart, but remember what goes where. You might find the culprit. If not take to a repair shop.

- Depends on your budget/what you can afford now and how long you want it to last/where the carpet is located. For a bedroom carpet, you want to denser, as you are walking around bear foot. For the entrance hall, perhaps something cheaper, with a rug or runner. What you should remember is the carpet, no matter what grade, gets covered in all the germs, dirt etc you walk in, you drop etc etc. So you should really swap it every so often anyway for hygiene/allergy reasons, regardless of the quality that goes down. A quick vacuum never gets the germs out, just the dust!

These are bought any where wood and flooring are sold, just get the kind made for rugs over wood. Since you know your rug size you can get the closest size to your rug. - if it has a beater bar it is probably getting stuck the carpet is wrapping itself around it take the carpets outside and beat them unless you have another vac. or setting where the bar isnt going around or use the hose part if there is one.
