- Because carpeting catches ALL the dirt. Do you let people walk thru there with shoes on? That will leave dirt particles all over the place. Dirt is a part of life. Also, it could be carpeting dye color that is wearing off. I would just buy some slippers and use them instead of socks.

- I would have to say with great difficulty, I would even go as far as saying it is best to take the carpet up and clean under it as well. Place water onto a carpet with dirt and stains and it just soaks through to the bottom. Placing perfumes and scented products down do not get rid of the smells they just mask them. However your question asked for alternative methods without a shampooer so the only other alternative I could think of would be to use a steamer on it like a Polti. The steam actually lifts the dirt to the surface so you can then wipe it with a damp cloth. The temperature of the steam also kills any small bugs and germs.
