Q: I am wondering if you can burn home heating oil in a diesel engine, I have a diesel generator and I am curious if I ran out of diesel say in a bad storm and couldn't get to a station for more could i but some home heating oil in it and run it with out messing things up?: diesel as far as i know is basically the same as home heating oil. diesel is a bit more refined. my uncle has been driving trucks for about 20 years now and when he was still an owner/opp. he would run home heating oil when diesel prices got high. so It will be just fine

Q: Hi, i have a peugeot diesel conected to an 8kw alternator via a lay shaft engine 2275rpm alt 1500rpm at 2250rpm engine produces max torque 70lb ft, alt should only need 33lb ft. under heavy load engine allmost stalls. I think i need avr control? Can you help with advice and componants? Many thanks Andre: You have to set up a speed control of some sort. There are electronic versions out there that run off the frequency of the alternator. They are not cheap. It is surprising just how much power is required to produce your desired electrical output. I have a large diesel direct coupled to a four pole alt.with mechanical speed control also for 1500 rpm for 50Hz 240V and have also found a little issue when welding with it. If the governor is set for the load it can over rev a bit - if set to be perfect without load it struggles to get back up to 230V if welding at 120A plus. It's been easier to live with it in the end. If you are stalling out you will have to do something about a reliable speed control - check out the quality alternative energy companies that actually install RAP systems and ask about the control setups they can provide for exactly your situation. Keep looking because there are systems that will fix your problem, and give you a very useful machine! Good luck.

Q: Hello, what I'm really trying to understand is how do large generators that power prisons, hospitals and various government buildings work? I have a basic understanding of regular house generators and their working process. What I want to know is how such a generator can acquire power in a case of a complete electric blackout, is there a back up supply line? another power source? Surely to supply a large building such as a prison or a hospital one would need a large reserve of power. So the question is where does that power come from? Or are they completely autonomous? Also are these generators commonly used nowadays and what is the difference between them and the reserve power system if any. I would greatly appreciate any answers that could explain the above. Q: I intend to buy Diesel Generator sets in USA but the problem is that the Generator sets available in USA are 50/60Hz /1800rpm, pf 1.0 , 277/480V whereas in my country the Frequency is 50Hz , Voltage is 220/380V and power factor is 0.8. What shall I do to convert the US spec's to what is my requirement.: You can adjust the frequency to 50HZ by running the generator at a speed lower than 1800rpm., that is 1500 rpm. At this speed check the terminal voltage. The voltage can be adjusted to 380 volts using the potentiometer adjustment on the generator panel. The 220 volts can be obtained by using a parallel connection assuming that the generator is wye connected. Actually, the voltage of 380 volts to neutral is 219.39 volts, which is approximately 220 volts. Hence, you may not have to reconnect the generator terminals. The difference in P.F. will not matter much.
