Q: Could I use red diesel in a diesel generator legally in the UK? Can I add vegetable oil to this and if so, in what ratio? Where are good sources of vegetable oil?: Red diesel is agricultural, no tax or tax reduced. The Red is only a dye to distinguish it from tax paid diesel. However using it illegally can result in very hefty fines if caught. Used and cleaned vegetable oil can be mixed with diesel, actual proportions I'm not sure of, but I think 3:1 oil to diesel. There are probably sites that explain in more detail. However why it has to be used veg. oil I don't know.

Q: I am wondering if you can burn home heating oil in a diesel engine, I have a diesel generator and I am curious if I ran out of diesel say in a bad storm and couldn't get to a station for more could i but some home heating oil in it and run it with out messing things up?: Yes. I would think you should always use home heating since it is a generator, you don't have to pay the highway taxes on it, which is the main difference.

Q: i would like to get the machine that is at least 2000 0r 3000 kw: I'll assume you have a typo in there and you really need only 2 kW! Are you looking for something with 120/240VAC or 120VAC only? Do you plan to install a transfer panel or connect with extension cords as needed?

You must place the generator outside the building and for that you need management or HOA approval.

Try looking up: 1/ The energy density of diesel fuel oil. 2/ The efficiency of a diesel internal combustion engine. 3/ The efficiency of a dynamo (alternator or electrical generator not turbine). Chuck in a bit of ineffieiency for the linkage between the ICE and the dynamo. Then just multiply the energy density of the fuel, by the efficiencies, and out will pop your answer.

Much of the bio diesel out there actually comes from Palm Oil Hundreds of thousands of acres of environementally sensitive areas are being converted to plantations to make Palm oil for biodiesel. This does much more harm to the environment than using diesel from fossil fuels.

If you pretend that each dollar weighs a pound, such a generator will cost a lot more than a ton of money. It will also run on either diesel or natural gas, not gasoline.
