- Well you already said it was a DC generator. By nature all generators generate their output voltage in cycles as they rotate, or even as they go back and forth for a linear generator. Therefore they generate AC, but the commutator converts this to DC. The commutator is a rotary switch that reverses the connection at the correct part of the rotation so that the current always flows one direction. That is DC, direct current instead of AC, alternating current. Sometimes AC generators may be called an Alternator. A shunt generator simply means it is self excited, that is the field magnet is connected across the generator's output, rather than having a separate DC generator for the field.

- There is no exact formula. Each engine is unique and the manufacturer has a fuel consumption chart for each engine. It is usually in BTU's per horsepower hour or the metric equivalent. It all has to do with engine efficiency and fuel heating value. See below:

- Caterpillar Diesel generators are usually shutdown weekly for maintenance. Diesel generators are are usually run with Diesel Fuel for cheaper generated electricity. If the engine is run continuously without shutdown, the unit may break down prematurely. I recommend you utilize two units of Diesel generators with enough capacity to handle your load. The units may be run alternately while one unit is undergoing maintenance.

- Suprisingly this will cause more wear than running it under load, if you need to charge batteries everyday assuming you don't have mains power for any legth of time I recommend you buy a generator for the job.

- You will not be able to use a home generator to make electricity cheaper than the utility sells it to you. There is substantial economy of scale that the utility puts into play and frankly you just cannot compete. Typical utility cost of generation is 4 - 8 cents / KW hr; typical larger home generator cost of generation is over 20 cents / KW hr.
- Q:Diesel trains use electric motors because the low-end torque is much greater than a mechanical drive drive train, I was wondering, since low-end torque is essential to starting with heavy dead weight, why more trucks and SUVs don't have electric motors on the wheels?

- eir if you sense the current load by a line resistance of perhaps 0.1 ohm, you can increase or decrease the RPM of the generator as the current rises and falls
