- The belt driven pump is operating all the time the engine is running. This takes some of the HP of the engine and causes wear and tear of the belt and the pump. The electric driven water pump is operated on demand from the water thermostat and only runs when the water temp. rises above the setting and shuts off again on returning to the setting. Saves engine HP and pump wear and tear...It's much more efficient.

- You should replace your water pump with the timing belt service. This is why: The belt from your timing belt turns your water pump if your water pump were to go bad and let's say seize up it could cause your timing belt also to fail. The other thing is that the labor to open everything back up would be a very high cost just to replace the water pump. It makes more sense financially to pay for the replacement of the water pump (30-60 dollars) than to go back in 20k miles into your new timing belt and have to take everything apart again to replace the water pump. The oil pump should not need replacing unless you have a vehicle with 300-400k miles and you are doing a rebuil engine. Use a quality synthetic oil and a quality oil filter and the oil pump should last for the life of the car.

When I had been to Firestone, they quoted $998 for Timing Belt Water Pump (both parts labor). When I called Midas, they quoted $550 for the same. Does anyone know why there is such a big difference? I have been a regular at Firestone, so Midas is new to me. Are they reliable? Midas is quoting low now, but would there be a surprise charge after I get it done? - The Difference is the amount of money being charge for labor,plus the mark up on the parts that most repair shops have. they may get the parts from the same place and pay the same price but have different pricing at the end. Labor rates vary thopugh they charge the same amount of time to do the Job (flat rate) their labor hour charge might be different. I would look closely at both WRITTEN Repair estimates and see what each one is charging for the belt and the Water Pump and how much labor they are charging for the Job. As to how the Water pump is related to the timing belt, The pump has to be rmoved to replace the Belt.

- No worries.. there are sometimes four mounts on a transversed engine. (front wheel drive) two at the top, on the frame rail supports, or on the inner fenders, these hold most of the weight of the engine and trans, there are normally two more, but I have seen only one used in some models, these are used to support the engine from twisting or rock on the upper mounts, due to tork or braking forces of the engine. removing ether of these mounts will not effect the support of the engine, as the two upper mounts do all the supporting of the drive-train. Loosening the front mount is safe, just remember that once the front mount is removed, a certain amount of swing or free play will result, as the engine will now just be hanging from it's top mounts, and will hang freely from it's center of gravity, so expect it to move some when mount is loosened or removed, be careful not to get your hand, or other part of the body, pinched or caught when the weight shifts. go slow.. and nobody get hurt... with the possible exception of a few busted knuckles.

- water pumps are never an easy fix. most the time you have to take the fan off, and the radiator as well so a person has room to work. MOST water pumps are in front of the motor, towards the bottom. If you follow your radiator hoses you will find it.
