- For loose debris and bits, take it out and give it a good shake like a rug. For tough 'stains', I use a spare, unused coarse-bristle toothbrush to bring them out of the carpet, then wash it down in the bath tub with hot water. I would not use any chemicals. Use only disinfectants that are reptile-friendly, which you can usually find at pet stores. I have never put my reptile carpet in the washing machine, because I get the feeling it would probably disintegrate.

- Hi Claire, In choosing a Rug which lasts approx 10 years or more I would suggest that in this case you choose a neutral color. I realize many may think that Tan, Taupe or Light Gray. are a safe choice and so basic. But with that said Carpeting can expensive. Changing the Wall Paint is far more cost effective. In the future, you may decide to use another wall color paint in the room. Tan, Taupe or Light Grey would be my thoughts for you ! * All of the above mentioned colors come in a variety of many shades. I also suggest taking a Paint chip with you to the store for comparisons if you are concerned. Tan/Taupe will provide an earthy color to the room, while Gray colors are visually cool color. - Quick fix: Febreeze. Won't clean it, but will hide the smell. Real fix: Clean with rag water then wash the whole rug in a (large) cold cycle with Woolite--NO dryer tho... hang it on a line somewhere. (Usually they're ok to wash; check for a tag on the rug that actually says it's ok first.) Also, don't overload your washer or you may break the washer. If the rug looks too big for your washer, you can always take it to a laundromat (won't get nastiness in your clothes washing machine either).

- You have 35.6 square yards so take that times 25 and you end up with $890.00 for that much carpet. Don't forget the pad and installation fee, sometimes it is included sometimes it is not. How I got my answer is 20*16=320 sqft. There are 9 square feet in a square yard so you divide 320/9=35.55555555555556 any carpet seller will round this off to 35.6 square yards. take 35.6sqyd * $25 = $890.00 for that much carpet. To Rob S remind me never to buy carpet from you! to get the square feet of the room you multiply the length and width 20*16 = 320 sqft for the room. Now I know that carpet rolls come in 12 and 15 foot wide rolls, and that the carpet can be sold either way by the sqyd or sqft. Just because you do it one way does not mean it is the only way.

- They give you an estimate if you go in and tell them the size of the room. Removing is usually included in carpet stores but Home Depot might charge for that but you can ask.
- Q: I need to replace my 45 year old carpet. It is showing it's age. But one thing that has never been done is having it re stretched. Not one wrinkle. It lays as flat and tight as the day it was put in. So this beings up the question. quot;Should a properly installed wall to wall carpet ever need to be re stretched?quot; I have noticed many carpets in newer homes that are all wrinkled. - Carpet restretching could be necessary from poor installation, the carpet not being stretched enough when it was installed, but it can also be caused by the carpet backing stretching. Carpet backing can stretch from being poorly made, or from humidity or temperature fluctuations. Sometimes even well made and properly installed carpet needs to be restretched. Sometimes poorly made and poorly installed carpet never needs to be restretched. Few carpets besides wool would last 45 years, congrats on keeping your carpet going for so long!
