I would not go light in color as sippy cups even non spill do leak a bit, Try somewhere like Ikea or Target if it is only temp so you can get decent quality at a low price, also Sams Costco sometimes have plain area rugs for 30 to 40 dollars they are about 6x8

- Depending on what kind of carpet it is (wool, polypropolene etc.) I would take a stiff brush and try to get the dirt out of the carpet. first and then vacuum again. I have a lightweight carpet cleaner. After using a still brush I use the carpet cleaner/vacuum. I put white vinegar and warm water in the resevoir and use that to clean any remaining stains. So far that has worked for everything my cat has done to my rugs. It sometimes takes 2 rounds with the vinegar but that's all I use.

- Hardwood floors are more common in houses and building built I'd say around 50 years ago. A lot of the housing and apartments are fairly newer so they just put down carpet. My guess is because when they build an apartment complex it's much cheaper. The smell that you're not used to may be the shampoo or cleaner they used to clean the carpet. I'd think the smell will go away after a while.
