Q: I have a 100 dollar budget on either trucks bearings or wheels. I have been riding my long board for a while but I dont really know to much on how most of the parts work. I want my longboard to go faster and stay fast for a while without slowing down. Should I buy new bearings or trucks. I have a sector 9 bob marley pintail longboard with bone reds trucks. If I buy knew bearings or trucks do I have to buy new wheels as well. But If I had to pick either buying new bearings or new trucks which one would be best for my longboard. thanks
If you have $100 you can seriously buy both. But if you are looking for longer roll time, bearings are what you need. NEVER SPEND A LOT OF BEARINGS!!! Bearings should never cost more than $15. If you get a good set of bearings and keep them cleaned and lubed when needed, there will be no difference between $100 bearings and $10 bearings. I recommend MileHighSkate or Magic bearings if you can get them. They are high quality and $9. If not, Bone Reds are easy to find, but arent as nice and cost $15. I also HIGHLY recommend you get bearing spacers. They are $5 and go inside your bearings and allow you to tighten your wheels all the way, giving you a smoother ride. You should also have speed rings too (those 8 rings that come with your current trucks). Trucks will not help you go faster.
Q: I took the ABEC 5 bearings out of my normal recreational blades and put them in my aggressive inlines that had ABEC 3's in them.they r all oiled great and before i test them i want to know the difference between them.
Abec 5 bearings are manufactured with a higher standard of precision than abec 3 bearings. Pretty much, with the abec rated bearings, the higher the number the higher quality of the bearings.
Q: Im just wondering how important it is to clean and regrease a cars wheel bearing. Working as a bicycle mechanic, this is something I do on a daily basis to every other bike we work on. And so Ive always wondered why I dont hear about wheel bearing going out on cars, or why I dont hear about having them serviced...Im assuming they are sealed bearings, but still it seems like they should need serviced every so often. I drive an early 90s ford truck, nothing fancy. Is this something I should consider doing, or should I not worry about it unless they start making noise?Thanks!
you rarely hear them going out on cars because most of the time the symptom gets disguised by worn brakes, when its the wheel bearing your brakes will get worn quicker, if you have a hub rotor designed for brakes then every time someone takes out the rotor they should have cleaned and repacked that rotor. if you have a floating rotor the bearings are pressed in and not really practical for servicing

use a long skinny punch to drive the old bearings out from the opposite side... then use a socket of the proper diameter and a hammer to carefully drive the new bearings and seals(when applicable)into place....I recommend buying the manual for your particular machine, they can save you a lot of money and headaches...

Unanswerable question. Example. My Goldwing does not use any bearings in the rear wheel. My KLR 650 uses three bearings. My Goldwing uses 4 bearings in the front wheel. My KLR 650 uses 2 bearings. Your question is too vague to be answerable.

Q: All bearings are designed with tolerances to allow the moving parts to move, but how are wear limits determined? In other words, after time, the components will start to wear out and the bearing will become looser. Looking at some aircraft maintencance manuals, they provide wear limits in the radial and axial directions. But how are these wear limitis determined? Is there a particular calculation that is done or is an arbitruary number chosen?
General ideas only. In the case of journal bearings with forced lubrication (oil pressure), increasing clearance results in oil pressure drop. Ideally, journal bearings hold an oil film which supports the rotating shaft and minimizes metal/metal contact. Automobile engines run for hundreds of thousands of miles using this strategy. Radial ball bearings will tolerate excess clearance (depending on the load) but the shafts they support often will not. In cases where oil seals are used, excess shaft play damages seals and permits leaking. In the case of motor or pump shafts, bearing slack permits rotor/stator contact or impeller/involute contact. Rotating masses are never perfectly balanced or axially aligned. Bearing slack multiplies unbalanced force and consequent load.

Q: My front driver's side wheel bearings need replaced. The current wheel bearings are open (visible when the hub is removed). When I look for replacement parts, OES and otherwise, the bearings offered are enclosed/canister style. This looks like it won't mate up properly with the existing hub. The auto parts store suggested removing the ring from the hub to make the new bearings fit. I'm concerned that doing so will irreparably damage the hub. To complicate things even more, it looks like the only style of hub available- OES included- are the type that work with the open bearings. Suggestions? Anyone ever had to modify a wheel hub? Advice is appreciated.
