- It is probably the backing disintegrating. You could try flipping it over and vacuuming it from the back side, though it will continue to degrade, this *might* cut down how much powder you see for a while.

- You need 320 s/f butttttttt..... Carpet comes mainly in 12 and 15 foot wide so depending on how you room is laid out with its walking patterns etc is how its laid and seamed. Generaly a seam will be on the furthest wall away from all traffic. Again if your carpet comes 15 foot ( some do some only comes 12 foot wide) you ll you ll need extra carpet for a seam . You ll be scraping out some so you ll have to get more than 320 s/f GL

- Using an iron and brown paper works excellent as a first step and after that if some wax still remains use a product called Goo B Gone sold in the market and hardware stores. Works excellent for lipstick, adhesives and other stains for clothing, carpets and on objects. Although if your carpet is wool it is tricky to get all of the wax stain out.

- If you are just tallking about an area rug, you buy a rug pad. If your talking about laying carpet over tile you would use carpet padding.

- You most likely could do that if you add about a 1/4 cup of anti-foaming agent to each batch of soap solutuion. It is available at the carpet cleaning rental station at most grocery stores. It keeps the foam from overwhelming and damaging the machine.
