- He has to provide a smoke detector, and in many areas also a carbon monoxide detector. In many large buildings there is a sprinkler system (the landlords put those in according to building code). If you want a fire extinguisher they are pretty cheap at Home Depot, etc. Also, keep in mind that if you see smoke or a fire, chances are better for you to get out and let the landlord deal with the impact of the fire. Just make sure you purchase renters insurance so your personal belongings are protected in the event of a fire.
