- the alarm is not adjustable . they are set to a standard which is tested and approved by U.L. (underwriters labrotories). If your detector is too sensitive , the sensor has probably become dirty and you shouldn't open it up and clean it. they are not user servicable. you have to replace it. go to ACE hardware or another hardware store and take the old alarm with you . just twist counter clockwise and unplug the wire harness. The people there are really helpful and have gotten me out of a lot of binds. so ask for the corect replacement and reinstall. PLEASE do not try to clean it or muffle the sound or try to adjust as some of the other answerers have suggested . the alarm is there to save your life. hope this helped. good luck.
