Q:Our (rented) townhouse has a very bleak cement block basement. Right now the blocks are painted white and cream (and not in a pretty pattern) and the floor is painted dark gray. We want to use the basement as a fitness room and a crafting area for scrapbooking. The lighting is also terrible. What are some ways we can brighten up the space and make it more hospitable without doing any permanent construction (remember we are renting) or spending a lot of money?
Because of your scrapbooking and since it is a basement you are going to want to consider storage options. Inexpensive shelving, either metal shelves or even sturdy boards and cinder blocks can be concealed behind curtains. I’ve even seen decorative shower curtains used for this. Curtains might help hide or break up some of the longer expanses of wall too. Take your time and watch clearance sales. You are probably going to want mirrors for your work out area. Inexpensive long, narrow dressing mirrors would be perfect for this and would also increase your lighting. They could be taken out of the cheap frames they come in and hung side by side or left in the frames for a more focused area. Some could even be hung side ways for a different effect on an adjoining wall. For the lighting I would think that an overhead in the work out area and halogen in your craft area would suffice and wouldn’t be too expensive. You don't want to scrimp on the lighting for your craft area, you will see the difference in the end product of your work if you do. All of these ideas leave you where anything you do have to purchase can easily be converted to another use in a new home. Good luck in your new place!
Q:Its a baffle over an old fireplace where a gas heater has been installed. A cement based repair was hopeless, builders glue lasted a while but eventually busted when heater used on high for lengthy period. Crack getting bigger so need to get it fixed before a re-installation becomes necessary. Thanks.
go to mitre 10 or place makers and ask an assistant to show you a heat resistant cement that will glue cement board but in saying that gorilla glue is fairlie versatile however companies have spent years discovering the best adhesive for every purpose and I'm conident you will find just the right stuff

Q:Can cement pressure plates be used for external walls? Oblique wall, can play a waterproof role? Durable?
This is not waterproof ah! Like this wall must first do waterproof.
Q:I am trying to fix both my bedrooms there are about 350/400sq and I need to know about how many boxes I should buy? the size for the cement board is: 3 x 5 x 1/4in.If any one can help that would be great. I stick at math lol
Don't say I suck at math lol. That's nothing to laugh at, it's something to be ashamed of. Quit admitting you suck at it and aspire to be better at it. You don't need cement board for your project. That stuff is for installing tile. You want drywall, which is available in 4x8 sheets in various thicknesses up to 5/8. Each sheet of drywall is 32 sq. ft, so you'll need at least 14, plus maybe another one or two to accommodate the necessary waste of cuts and cutouts.

Q:I am planning on replacing my current bathroom floor with 3/4 plywood. I want to use 1/4 cement board as my sub-floor. However, I am not sure if peel and stick flooring will work with cement board. Please help.
First of all, you sub-floor is the 3/4 plywood. Anything over that is overlayment. What goes over that is the flooring. I agree with the 1/4 luan. What I don't agree with is why in the world would anyone use peel and stick flooring.
Q:How to maintain cement board
Cement mortar plaster to water conservation, to avoid cracking, is scientific, it is necessary to do so.
Q:Thanks Alex. How much you think I should charge to install each 4x8 sheet of cement board?
I used to charge 2.50$ a s/f to install board or prep an area. That would include the board , thin set and nails ( or screws)to do it properly. 4x8 cement board is hard to find and heavier the all HE!!, so hire a friend. 3x5 sheets are much easier to handle by yourself.
