Q:i am putting tile on my tub surround walls, and will be using cement board! the sheet rock that is on there is not leveled,is there a trick to make the cement board leveled and plum when i apply it??? please help: Use a level and if the wall isn't plumb you'll have to cut long tapered shims to correct it, nailed on the studs underneath of the cement board.

Q:I want to install ceramic tile in my kitchen. My subfloor consists of 2x8 on 16 centers with 1/2 5 ply plywood. Will it be OK to lay 1/2 cement board directly on this or do I need to some how increase the strength of the subfloor? Any recommendations.: you could do that and MAYBE not have a problem. but if it was me, the 1/2 would come out and 3/4 would replace it. i have done a few jobs for people that dont want to replace the 1/2 and didn't have any problems with the tile or grout lines cracking. its just up to you really. if there is ANY give at all on you floor right now, id replace the 1/2.

Q:I am making a custom kitchen island and I planned to tile the top of it. The top of the island is going to be made of thick plywood for strength and I was told by the man at the hardwood store where I bought all the supplies that I needed to place cement board down on the plywood before I placed the tile down. I had bought a trim to go around the table top, hoping that it would be flush with the tile once the time went into place, however using the cement board makes the trim flush with the cement board and after the tile is installed, it would be about 5 mm taller than the trim. Do I really need to use the cement board? Would it be a bad idea to place the tile and mortar directly on the plywood?: I've laid some tile, floors,showers, and a couple tables(more of the mosaic type). I'm pretty sure that you need to use hardibacker(cement board) only for showers or kitchen/bath floors. It's main purpose is to prevent any air /moisture from seeping up through the bottom ,thus causing the tiles to break. Hardibacker helps seal all that out. But I don't think it's mandatory for your project. You won't have to worry about spilled liquids after your table is cured and sealed. The grout is what keeps anything from getting under your tiles. Make sure you wait at least 24 hours before sealing your new tile job. Maybe check out a tile book from the library or look up How-to do -it Yourself type of sites for tips. Good Luck!

Thanks!: i think most of the time the boards come in a dimension that puts them below the ceiling line and the difference is filled in with water resistant drywall and finished regularly, then most of the cement board is covered in tile so little finish work is needed on it .. if its all the way up probably just tape it and finish as normal but strictly speaking, the whole layout isnt correct if it terminates at the ceiling joint ..
