Q:I noticed how all the commuter trains here in Massachusetts use diesel engines. Will they switch to overhead lines in the not so distant future?

Bombardier has come up with some new technology that will not require the ugly overhead power lines. Right now its being geared for trams and light rail. A box is buried underneath the track, and when the train passes over there is a surge of energy that gets passed to the train battery. A person can walk over the track and box, but they will not be affected. Right now the technology is not advanced enough for heavier trains. Massachusetts will probably go to a new dual mode locomotive by Bombardier thats being built right now in Kassel Germany. It has a pantograph on top for the power lines. When it comes to a line without power it uses diesel and battery. Its really a revolutionary locomotive that will be ready in 2011. New Jersey Transit has 28 on order with an option to buy almost 90 locomotives if it works out.

Hey kesha, welcome to Hawaii, ok? So, lectricity very spensive hea Hawaii, main reason gonna be that we generate with Diesel Generator, which cost lot, ok? Now some wind generator hea, but sad thing is, it MORE SPENSIVE than Diesel, hard to believe, but true, ok? Also, few months ago supplier of diesel for generators try to get state to allow import of Palm Oil, for use inna generators, but all greenie/whale hugger/sierra club idiots stop that cause they say palm oil production cause rainforest to go away, ok? Stupid people, I say, it would have cut cost of diesel in HALF, but would require replacement and modification of some of the diesel engine, but still cost less for people, but not gonna happen now, ok? Most of residential property hea, like studio apartment, gonna have they own meter, and cost per Kilowatt hour round $.35, ok? Now that not sound like too much, cept that if you compare to otha place, like for instance LA, they pay bout $.15, for same amount, ok? Or, place like Las Vegas, they pay bout $.08 per KWhour, ok? So, you can see gonna add up inna hurry, specially if you use lectric to heat water, cook, clean, a/c, which gonna be normal for lotta place hea, specially on Oahu, yeah? So, lotta people I talk to pay 100 to 120/ month for lectric, but you can save some money too, by not leave no lite on, take cool/warm and very short shower, ( if you use lectric water heater), not use A/C, eva cept onna really hot day, use sweeper rather than vacuum, keep fridge on higher setting, you can maybe get it down to 50, 60 buck a month, ok? I would like to help--but I need to know what size of generator you want 2.8 k-12 k ; and what type of fuel Gasoline, propane, diesel. I would ask why don't you mount a Onan Micro quite or light into the side or front of your fifth wheel---but with out seeing your trailer I have no idea what to recommend

Q:A couple years ago the power in our area was out for two whole weeks because of ice and such, we stayed warm thanks to gas heating but now I'm in an all electric mobile home in the same area. All I want to power is the refrigerator, deep freeze, microwave, one laptop and at least one, maybe two little plug in heaters.I need to know what size/type generator to get and if I need a separate kit or anything in order to hook up to my mobile home. Total the wattage of All of the devices you want on the generator. Typical heater is about 1500 watts, a microwave about 900, the freezer and the refrigerator about 1500 or 1800 watts each, totals to about 4500 watts. If you get a gas generator which is the least expensive type then a unit 1.5 times the total is the smallest you should choose for a typical run item these will probably be rated about 7500 watts peak. Any smaller and you risk brownouts that will destroy the equipment you are trying to operate. A 10% cushion is just too small for these smaller units. If you choose a more expensive diesel powered unit it is safer at the 7500 watts, if you choose natural gas or propane then it must be double the computed wattage.

Q:I have been trying to research the specifics of utilidor functionality for nearly two weeks and have come up with hardly any information. What I'm wanting to know is, at certain access points of utilidors in artic areas, is there something above ground that powers the tunneling below like possibly a transformer or a generator? I know it seems unfeasible to have either one out in the open to be exposed to the elements but I still want to know. And also even if this isn't the case now, was it so when the tunnel systems were first made?

Utilidors is an acronym for Utility Corridors. This may be a tunnel system that contains all the necessary utilities to support a community, business of some other area needing electric, gas, water, sewer, communications, etc. These are found both above and below ground level depending on environmental concerns, costs, etc. The generators and transformers used to supply various points along the corridor and may be located above or below ground depending on design. A UG designed transformer for instance could be used below ground. A generator needs to be driven by something, gas engine, turbine, diesel engine, etc. these may be located below ground but it will have to have an external exhaust port somewhere. two stroke diesels are still in use today most of them are in the marine field powering large boats and alot are still in generators and you still see quite a few in buses. I've also seen one on a drag strip. as for the in line six vs. the v6 the jeep is well known for an excellent trail vehicle of witch torque is desired at lower rpm and the the inline engine does just that it provides ample toque for the jeeps stock size for most trails.

Q:I want to purchase a solar powered backup generator in the event that we have a power outage. I don't want a gas/diesel generator as I don't want to have to fight everyone else to get gas for a generator. I've been only able to find one solar generator that would seem to work for my home. Any suggestions?

A solar powered generator would certainly not be what I would want in an emergency.
