- Q:It looks like our toilet water shut off valve is leaking. We are trying to turn off the water by turning the lever on the hot water heater, but this only turned off the hot water. So the cold water is still not turned off? We thought the one lever at the hot water heater would turn it all off, but it didn't work. Is there actually a separate water shut off valve for cold water in my house? Help!!
- The water shut off valve is located where the pipe enters the house from the city water main. Maybe on the outside wall of your house near an outside faucet. Or maybe in the ground under a cover plate near an outside faucet, or maybe in the basement near where the pipe comes into the house from outside. There is also ususally a valve out at the water meter. The valve at the hot water heater just shuts of the cold water supply to the hot water heater, so it only effects the hot water.

- The water hammer is due to the sudden closure of the control valve. They don't turn off slowly. The sudden shutoff of the valve causes the inertia of the water to slam against the end of the sprinkler pipe. You can device from a well stocked hardware store to place in you water line to reduce or eliminate the hammer. As for the leaking problem, I disassembled the control valve and found the diaphragm out of position. On mine, there is a very, very small key on the diaphragm that aligns it with the case. Also check for debris in the solenoid valve seat and anywhere else in the valve. I can't address commercial vs residential valves other than if the valves are brass, they are more durable.

- If the car gets to sit for several hours that should not be a problem. Otherwise give the other paint 72 hours to dry hard before removing the valve cover. You may have to rag it a bit. Use hi-heat paint on the covers.(follow directions on the can)

- Probably won't help. Idle Air Control valves are blamed probably ten times as often as they are at fault in Honda engines. It is mounted on the side of the throttle body and has a connector with wires instead of hoses. You don't mention why you are interested in the IAC valve, but if it is because of idle hunting (revving between about 500 rpm and 1500 rpm smoothly and rhythmically), a bubble in the coolant is by far the most common cause. If the coolant is changed and not bled the normal idle speed can't get hot coolant to the Fast Idle Thermo valve (FITV) so it figures the engine is cold and the valve opens to raise the idle. That raises the coolant to the FITV, which then decides the engine is warm so the valve closes, dropping the idle speed, over and over. Burping the coolant, by opening the bleed nipple on top of one of the radiator hose housings at the engine half a turn until a steady stream of coolant comes out, should stop that. Do it with the engine cold.
- Q:I got a '99 bmw 740il that is leaking and burning oil. It shoots smoke out the exhaust when i first start it from burning oil. And the car misfires when idling, i did a tune up and the spark plugs were soaked in oil causing the tune up not to help anything for long cause it was missfiring the next day. - The symptom of bad valve stem seals is blue smoke after sitting overnight. But once that smoke is gone, a bad valve stem seal won't have any effect on engine running or idling. And it certainly won't cause a misfire. Worn valve guides can do all those things. You have far more serious problems than just valve stem seals. Get a wet/dry compression test and a cylinder leakdown test to isolate the problem to either valves or rings.

- Hi, Yeah. The site I found (source) has some pretty good information. Find the model number on the refrigerator and call repair services. You may need to replace a part. If there is no water flow, maybe something is clogging the line and it can be cleaned. With today's economy prices are difficult to predict. PJ

- Your mom probably has a Bicuspid aortic valve, that she was born with.. it means that the valve between her heart and the aorta has two valve leaflets instead of the usual three valve leaflets (not four) in normal people. Bicuspid aortic valve is caused by fusion of two of the three leaflets. It's a fairly common congenital condition, and is associated with a risk of aortic aneurysm (a weakening of the wall of the blood vessel which then causes ballooning of the vessel wall)...usually of the ascending aorta. All the best for her safe recovery.

- the guy above me got to it before i did. sounds like either a diaprham has just gone out, or the solenoid plunger is stuck, or there is a rock or something inside the valve, not closing it all the way. like trying to close a door with your foot in it. it will not close all the way. A word of advice would be to go ahead and replace the anti-siphon valves with regular inline valves. anti-siphon valves are pretty much junk any type. As far as diagnosing the problem now, 1. check your timer's programming and make sure that its not sending out power to this zone all of the time. ( this would make the timer bad). 2. carefully open the valve up ( with the water turned off of course), and inspect the diaprham. if it has any tears or ripps in it, get a new diaphram, if not, then flush the lines out with the valve open to see if any debris is in the line( rocks pipe pieces, etc.) and clean it out. 3. take out the solenoid and make sure the plunger in it is not sticking. ( if so replace the solenoid). 4. if all else fails just simply cut out and replace the entire valve and plumb in a new one properly. personally i would use either Hunter PGV valves, Rainbird DVF 100 valves, or Irritrol 205 series valves. all are inline models. antisiphon valves tend to fail. i work on sprinkler systems full time for 95 $ per hour of labor for our company. hope this can help you out John A
- Q:I know absolutely nothing about cars. My AC stopped working, I had a new air compressor, drier, expansion valve put on. It was also vacuumed out. Problem is it will not take a recharge, and there is no refrigerant in it at all. But it keeps reading high pressure, I don't know the readings I was told it is reading high, and will not take a recharge. Someone on yahoo answers suggested it might be the Schrader valve is this a problem that it can cause if it's bad that it will not let you recharge, and read a high pressure reading? Is there a Schrader valve for the low pressure valve amp; the high pressure valve or is there just one? I have a 96 Dodge Stratus ES. Thank you for any help or ideas.
- 2 valve 1 low 1 high the valve is cheap (looks like the same as one that goes in a bicycle innertube) but if a shop puts it the labor price for your area, here around 75.00 this dont make sense. to have high pressure there has to be something in the lines. and the valve would be open to give you a reading so unless its leaking its working. with a vac on it and 0 134a you should have a reading of -20(+or-) in of mercury on the low side (below 0) and 0 on the high side. If the high side valve was not depressed (opened) then you would have the can pressure reading (about 80psi depend on temp) only if you tried to fill from the high side. Ok try this find the line going to the firewall and inside the car, this is the low (return) line. dont use the one that goes to condenser at the front of the car (the radiator looking one). find the fill valve and thread on the fitting (may have a cap on it) tighten the fitting until it is tight then use a pair of pliers and turn 1/8-1/4 turn more then try to fill.
- Q:i have an 87' monte carlo ss, 64K on 305 w/ cam, headers, roller rockers and springs. ive been seeing blue smoke out of my exhaust ALOT during start up, but it also continues to smoke at idle, i've been told it's a good chance i need my valve seals replaced and was wondering what the general ballpark was assuming there was no other complications in the process of replacing these?
- well,if your valve seal,do go bad look for oil,in tail pipe,to check for bad head gasket,pressure check spark plug,with a pressure gauge,full charge battery,ingition coil off,stop from starting,remove all spark plug,strew in gauge ,checking one at a time,if two spark plugs close together read low gasket is blown,between the two,also try over flow pipe on car take off,from reservor white container,put end in a clear ,water jug,start car,run for awhile,see if you see air bubbles,in clear jar,blown gasket,but.be carful doing these tests,u-can also watch u-tube,to see how these.thing are done..
