Intake and exhaust valves have different clearances.Which one?To check the clearance- the cam must be in the proper position.Then you take a feeler gauge and measure the distance-you have to do this to each valve before you can remove the cam to make an adjustment.Under the cam lobe-on top of the valve there is a can that rides up against the cam lobe.Between the inside of the can and the top of the valve there is a little round pocket that has a shim that looks like a watch battery.These shims come in different sizes--replacing them with a different size is how you make the adjustment.This is not anything that I would try to do without a manual--things can go bad real quick in the adjustment stage.Not a job for a 1'st timer but you can learn if you watch someone doing it.

First off, you remove the PCV hose and unscrew the plastic nut that retains the PCV valve. Next you remove the air intake tube from the throttle body and the air intake housing. Now locate the bracket on the side of the throttle body that contains the throttle cable. Remove the 2 bolts from this bracket and remove the cables from the throttle body. You should now be able to remove the valve cover from any obstructions. If you are not cleaning the valve cover, there is no need to remove the PCV valve. If you are cleaning it with soap and water, take the PCV out. The gasket is one piece and rubber, but you may find it a pain to keep the gasket in the groove on the valve cover, so you might try some yellow weatherstrip sealer to help hold the gasket in place. Let it dry for a little while before reinstalling the valve cover, so the gasket doesn't 'roll' out of the groove on the corners, or it will leak heavily. Good luck.

Q:The time has come to re shim my 06 450, and I am having a small problem (I think anyway). The exhaust valves have decreased to below the required spec and need to be replaced with thinner shims (as is usually the case), but the left intake valve has for some reason increased its valve clearance (from 0.16mm to 0.23mm). The valve seats in the head take a constant pounding when the valves close - causing the valves to move up into the head and tighten the valve clearance. Carbon build up on the valve seats and valves will hold the valves open a fraction (unnoticeable in the engine's performance) - which will loosen the clearance.
Q:I had some great answers to my question yesterday... I have decided to have the valve job done... Since I have decide to go this route... I need some reassurance, the few people I have suggessed this option to have now told me that typically after a valve job other problems will start showing up. They have said that the car isn't worth putting money into and to get ride of it.
well, is the car in good shape otherwise, like the tranny, suspension and the body?, if it is, then its probably wort a valve job, its cheaper then another motor.

remove valve covers, watch front left two lifters and turn engine, by bolt that holds harmonic dampener to front of crankshaft, so mark on dampener lines up with mark on front cover. If rocker arms do not move as marks line up engine should be on top dead center number 1 cylinder. Now you can adjust exhaust valves 1, 3, 4, 8 and intake valves 1, 2, 5, 7 [ odd numbers are on the left bank from the front 1,3,5,7 even on the right bank from the front 2,4,6,8]. Adjust by turning nut in rocker arm out until movement is felt than tighten until all movement is gone and tighten one turn more. After done with the first eight valves turn engine over one full turn till marks line up again. Then adjust exhaust valves 2,5,6,7 and intake valves 3,4,6,8 the same way.
Q:OK, I would like to run my shorty headers open on my Camaro, but I have two questions.1. I heard valve damage may occur because cold air gets in there. Why isn't this the case with straight pipe exhaust, doesn't the cold air travel to the valves in that case anyway?2. The valve damage from open headers sounds more like a theory than reality. I, and numerous other drag racers, have run open headers for decades without valve damage. More often than not, it's either the lower end or other parts of the valve train that crap out long before the valves. The O2 sensors will work if they stay hot enough, otherwise you may need to put heated sensors in.
Q:I have three zone valves, two out of the three don't ignite the gas. Once I turn up the thermostat I see the lever on the zone valves move but no gas ignition. Only one of three works fine. Any leads? Thanks!
Located in most zone valves is a end switch. The end switch closes when the zone valve opens. It sends a signal to the AquaStat to bring on the boiler. The pump runs as soon as there is a call for heat on any zone. Now if the water temp in the boiler has reached its high limit than the boiler will not come on. It will wait until the temp drops in the boiler and then it will ignite. So watch it for a few minutes. The end switch or connections may be to blame if the boiler does not come on at all after a reasonable amount of time. The end switch does fail on occasion. Best bet is to call a professional if you continue to have problems
Q:i have a 1997 dodge avenger ES with a 2.5L v6. im wondering if my EGR Valve could be bad i get about 14mpg on gas. my car has a poor idle but will not stall idle gets kinda bad if the airconditing is on. I did a complete tune up and yes it was done right. and i changed my Idle air control valve. after i changed the valve i drove a few miles and i got a check engine light for insuffecient EGR flow but then it went away and never came back. I took the valve off and cleaned it with carb cleaner. im trying to find out why my ide is kinda poor and if the car sits a few days it takes a little longer to start.my motor has 142k miles but has been properly maintained.
you should be getting way more than that on gas mileage at least on the road anyway,a bad egr valve will cost you around 3-5 miles per gallon if its leaking and doesn't seal of when it should, i went through this with out stratus ands its 2.4.it got real bad mileage,cleaning the valve didn't help it none at all, i went to a salvage yard and got a used one off a blown engine to try it to see if that would help it and the mileage came back up on it so i replaced it with a new one,you should average about 15-17 in town with that one and around 21 or better on the highway if its running right,id try that if everything else is right and you have double checked for codes and don't get any but the egr valve you don't have anything too loose,if you have had it scanned and dont come up with any other codes it would about have to be that or really low compression on the engine causing that too happen,a weak fuel pump believe it or not will cause one to get really bad mileage and run and idle bad also,and this is often over looked as a possibility,check those things if its not them we,ll figure out whats causing it,good luck.
