- Q:so i'm replacing a one hole faucet, and i'm stuck at the very first step. the cold water valve turned off with no problems. i tried to turn on the cold water and none came out. unfortunately, the hot water valve just squeaks and goes around and around, never cutting off the water. when i turn it, it also leaks a minute amount of water, though regardless of which way i twist, it stops as soon as i do. i can't just unplug the hot water valve with it still running water, so does anyone have any ideas? how does one replace a valve like this to begin with? is it possible that there is a shut off valve for the house that i myself can access (without having to call someone to shut off my water)? in case you haven't noticed, i am a bit plumbing deficient, so if you could explain it without too much jargon, it would be much appreciated.

- As goobersmooch says, your guess regarding 4 valves is wrong. On a 4-valve engine (i.e. that means 4 valves per cyclinder) there are two exhaust and two inlet valves. I can't remember offhand if there are bikes with 3 valves, but there are definitely cars with 3 valves. They are usually one inlet, two exhaust, because the exhaust valves get hotter (having to deal with hot burned gases) and two valves give a better surface-to-volume ratio, thus aiding with keeping them cool. I'm fairly sure there are bikes with 5 valves per cylinder, but I'm danmed if I can remember what they are. Why? Same principle applies - more valves in a given space means a better area for the gases/vapours to flow over = more efficiency. But eventually the ol' cost/benefit ratio catches up. It's harder to make a valve train to open 5 valves than it is to make one to open 4,3, or 2. All engines have their intakes on the carburettor side, whether 2-stroke or 4. Or, more acurately, their carbs are on the intake side. 2-stroke valves, if they have any, are completely different to 4-stroke, and they are on the intake side only. A 2-stroke engine doesn't necessarily need to have valves.

Animal valves do not require blood thinners, although many people I know have ended up on thinners because of other problems. The other advantage is that they are quiet. Mechanical valves, often called metal aren't always truly metal. Older valves were thus a scan using an MRI was not possible. Mine was put in during 1995 and is called metal but does not cause any problem with an MRI and I know others from that time frame also with no problem. I expect it to last my whole lifetime and I never needed any anti-reject meds and few people I know have. I do tick like an old watch especially when I get winded or tired, but over the 13 years I've had it only one person outside of medical professionals examining me have ever noticed. It doesn't keep me awake but I do know some people who notice theirs, but the newer the quieter. I do have to take blood thinners, but for me and most of those I know don't have major problems maintaining a therapeutic level. You have to have a blood test routinely to know but they now have a finger prick machine so it is quick and easy. I only know of one person whose body rejected valves and had to have it removed and animal placed in. From those I know usually children they will do tissue just because a child won't be as careful and watchful of bleeding.
