- Depends on the cost of the carpet per yard which is how most carpet is sold. 12' x 12' is the equivalent of 16 yards of carpet, You also need to buy pad if the old pad is worn (its probably as worn as the carpet you are replacing), Go to your local carpet store and get per yard prices for the carpet you like. As a general rule, for the basic no frills in-stock Home Depot variety carpet, I would figure approximately $9-$10 per yard and about $2-3 per yard for pad (I know prices vary but thats a rough idea). Around $200. As for the installation - you will have to call around to find out the per yard price to install because it varies depending on where you are located.

- We don't know when the carpet was initially installed. Was it 5 years old before you got there? Unfortunately, there is usually a process when you first sign your lease that you do a walk-through of the premises to determine if there were stains on the carpet before you lived there, damage to appliances, holes in the walls etc. It sounds like you didn't know you were supposed to do that, or weren't told. You could ask that the landlord allow you to try to have the carpet cleaned before they charge you to replace it...it shouldn't really be your responsibility to replace carpet unless you seriously did some damage to the majority of it. If they refuse, then tell them you will see them in small claims court. Just make sure you send a certified letter requesting that you are allowed to pay for the cleaning before they replace it. If you do go to court you will need proof that you sent them the letter. On the other hand, if you had dogs in your apartment, or something like that, and they determined that the carpet was torn up or ruined, you may not have much recourse. You should look at your lease and see what it says. That will help you determine whether or not you actually signed a document making you liable for those kinds of costs. good luck.

Swing the rug up and over the horse so that the rug lands the right side up. This needs to be done at the right speed so that the rug sails over the back of the horse and lands in the middle... - Send him a certified letter with return receipt - this way you know he recieved it. Let him know that the carpet is starting to come up and that you consider it a safety hazard. Ask politely if he/she can replace the carpet. Look up landlord - tenant laws in your state, there may be specifications on when carpet needs to be replaced. This may be a time limit or if certain conditions are met (ie: coming loose, excessive tears/damage, etc.) If you can find something that states he has a responsibility to replace the carpet then include that in your letter. If you can't find anything specific according to your state laws then you'll just have to keep asking politely. If he takes no action and it IS his legal responsibility then the next step would be to send him another certified letter stating that he has (specify a time limit, I would say 30 days) to replace the carpet or you will replace it and withhold the amount from your rent. Check and see if this is legal in your state - it is in most.
