- Q: I'm getting new carpet installed in a home I'm selling. It's not a high end home, just a 1700 sq foot house that I'll list for $400k. The carpet the carpetman recommended to me is a shaw 18 oz face weight, 48 total weight carpet. To go along with it is 7/16quot; 6lb padding. Is this good enough? Will it look and feel nice enough for the people who come to see the house?
- The basic weight of the carpet and the padding suggested is a good combo. The pad and thickness is above the standard to cover any carpet warranties. 7/16ths is the thickness carpet manufacturers recommend and the least padding you can have ( to cover warranties) is 5 1/2#. - Q: The carpet in my apartment was old to begin with and then I got my dog a few months ago and we have poty training issues. Now my carpet and whole place smells. I bought a carpet cleaner and have tried all sorts of produts but nothing seems to work. I don't really want to have them done professionaly done because of the dog. Help?
- Not much you can do really. Usually the smell is trapped in the padding and not the carpet. Only real solution I know is to tear it out and replace the padding and carpet. I would also contact a pro service (can usually get 3 rooms for $100). The equipment they use may be better than equipment for home use. Check the guarantee the company offers. Make sure they guarantee your satisfaction with the results. Just don't expect miracles...there is only so much they can do with smells in carpet pad.

- This mat be handmade carpet, should be fully paved! Keep a hole in advance! Generally the hole height is 1cm--1.5cm. adjust according to the thickness of the carpet! Generally the carpets are higher than the tile, because of the long time stepping, the carpet yarn will go down, and it will sink after a long time!
- Q: The carpet will go in a finished basement. The basement has bare concrete right now.
- If your basement is at most, a little damp, then I'd hesitate before putting in carpeting. You don't want mold to form under the carpet. Try to dry the basement out first. Maybe all you need is a good dehumidifier that you will continue to run. If you're not sure about the floor, do a simple test. Tape a 3x3 foot plastic sheet onto the floor. Seal all edges. Come back in a few days. If there is moisture between the floor and plastic, don't finish the basement floor with carpet. Once the basement is dry, just put an 8-pound pad under the carpet. You don't need roofing felt under it. If you are gluing carpet or carpet squares directly to the floor, be sure to seal any and all cracks in the cement first. Also, use a water-soluble glue in the event that you have to rip up the carpet due to a flooded basement. Don't cover the drains with carpet or, at least, mark them off so you can find them later. There is a spray mold-retardant that can be applied to the carpet after it is laid down. We had that done in our basement. I'm not sure if that can be done prior to laying the carpet, i.e., to spray the floor and/or the padding first.

- I just Googled Ashley area rug and noticed that they are made from nylon, one of the points being easy to clean. Can you ask the manufacturer or place you bought it? I'd try just straight white vinegar sponged on and then blotted. I'd then elevate or hang the rug so both sides can air until completely dry. Get a squirt bottle and use it keep the cat off the rug.
