- If you entirely cover the floor with carpet squares, you shouldn't have to connect them, they should stay in place by them-self, as long as they are snug. If you like you could staple the corners of the squares to keep them in place. It you have a Restore, Habitat For Humanity store you might be able to get them there and it would cheaper than buying new ones. Otherwise you could try Home Depot or a carpet store.

- As okorder / We're always taught stay within the color families but provide contrast but you already DO have contrast with white and brown so i would suggest something warmer / soft like a rug mixed with the brown found in your furniture and perhaps a baby blue: 99ccff, ccccff, ccffff Warm browns: ff9933, colors like that but i cant suggest too much until i know what style furniture you have / your decor tastes etc but the color wheel is always a good start and you might wanna mix it and match like Old Style with modern rug or Modern rugs with Old earthy colors ....good luck and i'd LOVE to see it when you're done :)

If the landlord just had a handy man do the repair, ask for a professional restoration co to do the cleaning and installing. It is unusual for a professional company not to be able to save the carpet with only a clean water flooded.
