The rug doctor will not remove the stains, but if you use an enzyme cleaner on the spots first, any rug machine will, with any shampoo. Cross your fingers there's no smell. That's another problem.

Q:we are in the market for a carpet shampooer/deep cleaner but on a bit of a budget. we are not looking to RENT one. anyone have any suggestions or recommendations? we would definitely need one that agitates the carpet.

There's nothing I can do to make them cleaner, so I was thinking about gettinga long rug to go in front of our couch. The couch is a dark green, our carpet is a light beige. Would that look retarded, or like a blatant cover up? And if I get one, what color should it be? Our walls are a light off white.

Nothing wrong with that. I have a large area rug over my carpet. I do roll it up every once in awhile to vacuum under it. Find a pattern rug which won't show stains. Use the colors in the sofa, carpet, and accent color. That'll be a safe bet. If you have a coffee table in front of the sofa the area rug won't show all that much. And if you didn't like it, roll it up before company arrives. At least the carpet will be clean. When my kids were small, I told them I was going to pull up the carpet and live with concrete floors. Just hose the floor when needed. Of course, they didn't care.

Q:The previous owner of my home put up walls for separate rooms OVER existing carpet in the basement. He/she did not install baseboard along the new walls. I'm planning on replacing the carpet in the basement as well as installing baseboard along the walls. What should I do first? The carpet installer is going to have to cut the carpet from underneathe the walls in order to replace it. Should I wait until after the new carpet is installed or can I go ahead and put the new baseboard in regardless?

Carpet first .. baseboard after..to hide the staples..and hold the carpet edge down..if you put carpet in after baseboards you will have problems with unravelling of the carpet with your vacuum..carpets first.

Another alternative: take a peek under the carpet. You might have hard wood flooring under it. If so, just rip the carpet up. You'll have a gorgeous floor and it will cost you nothing. Even if the floor needs sanding and re-staining, you'll have a beautiful floor for a very small investment. You can rent Sanding Machines from Lowe's and Home Depot. And Stains don't cost much.
