- Q:Hello,I'm doing a research project that requires me to report on five ethical missteps made by engineers/staff at the Fukushima plant that caused the disaster. I'm having trouble with this research because most of the information i'm finding centers around the earthquake and subsequent tsunami that caused so much damage.Can anyone point me toward any human errors that centered around poor ethical judgement?
- If you just google human error fukushima you're going to get (a) a few articles from the summer of 2011; (b) a rash of articles from July, 2012; (c) a rash of articles from Oct-Nov, 2013; and (d) a rash of articles from last week (Feb 2014). Whether all will cite ethical missteps is unknown to me.
- Q:I am wondering if you can burn home heating oil in a diesel engine, I have a diesel generator and I am curious if I ran out of diesel say in a bad storm and couldn't get to a station for more could i but some home heating oil in it and run it with out messing things up?
- diesel as far as i know is basically the same as home heating oil. diesel is a bit more refined. my uncle has been driving trucks for about 20 years now and when he was still an owner/opp. he would run home heating oil when diesel prices got high. so It will be just fine
- Q:A couple years ago the power in our area was out for two whole weeks because of ice and such, we stayed warm thanks to gas heating but now I'm in an all electric mobile home in the same area. All I want to power is the refrigerator, deep freeze, microwave, one laptop and at least one, maybe two little plug in heaters.I need to know what size/type generator to get and if I need a separate kit or anything in order to hook up to my mobile home. - Q:HelloI am doing a question on my homework and im being asked to determine how long a tank of gas on a diesel generator would last a family if one tank produced 20kW of electricity. This family uses 2.052kWh of electricity every day. The problem i have run into is that i don't know how to determine how long tha tank can last with only those values, i have a feeling im missing something very obvious here. - You can't quite do this from first principals. The Gen-set manual may give a spec for fuel consumption, or for efficiency. More likely it does not. The solution is to fill the tank, run it on a dummy load or a real load, if you like, and see how long it takes to get to half way. Or some graduated point. I wouldn't run a diesel dry, as they tend to continue to run on their lubricant until they seize up. Much as I like to model and estimate things, I'm still an empiricist at heart. Jim Jarvis

- Hey, firstly this is a very broad question and I'm not quite sure where to start but here goes. There are several different types of generators, petrol are the cheapest (you could get a cheap one for $500-800) this is probably all you would require for a tree house. Diesel generators are more expensive but they are more reliable and diesel fuel does not deteriorate over time as petrol does. (I know this is too much information) For a 15 year old I would suggest: Plenty of couches, chairs beanbags etc. A easy way to get into the tree house, stairs around the trunk for example. A swing down from the tree house. If you have a pool or a trampoline you get organize so you could jump from a low platform.

- I would suggest using a set of solar panels that will supply enough power to run the fridge and a bit more, with a battery storage to get through the night. This can get you through months of power outage. It will be much more costly than a gas generator to provide the same emergency coverage. But you do not use it just for emergency. It provides that power year round for 20+ years, cutting your electric bills. This is not a lot cheaper than just paying your electric bills. If you get the best, most cost effective solar panel system it will be a break even compared to the electric company.
- Q:I have two deisel engines and two tank feeds, how can I connect the genset (4KVA) . I am conerned when the engines are idling or even running they will start the genset. I do not want to put an extra tank.Thank you
- If your tank has another port on it for a fuel line that is where you hook up. If not go to the supply line at the tank and put in a T fitting and then a shut off valve for each engine. Run the supply line to the generator from that T. You will also need a return line from the generator that you can T into at the return line from the engine at the tank. Many people that convert from gas to diesels run into these same problems. Often a fitting is made up that is put in the fuel fill line to allow for the return line. The generator supply and return lines will be smaller then the engine fuel lines. Running the engines will not cause the generator to start.
