- Q: I just bought a house and we have well water. When I went out to change the filter on the pump I noticed a valve leaking...I went to check on it and noticed it had two settings if you will. one says System and the other says by pass if I move the lever to system the leak stops, if I move it back to bypass the leak continues...question is which one should I have it set on and what is the purpose?
- Okay, Adam, we also have a well and just put in a new one. The setting that says System means that the water is running through the filter. The setting that says by pass means that the water is NOT running through the filter. You will have water either way in your house (or you should). It is just either, it is running through the filter, or it is not. I hope I have helped. gram
- Q: Car is ford taurus 98.The car had some problems including overheating as thermostat was bad so was was not working. i drove it 25 miles to garage (i had to stop once because too hot to let it cool), i brought it to Ford who replaced the thermostat. Now they tell me some bits of thermostat broke and they need to replace the waterpump and want $620 for it. The other repair were also extremely expensive and i want to bring it to another garage 1.3 miles away on flat road.-1- is it safe to drive 1.3 mile with no water pump or should iget it towed?-2- should i have to pay for the water pump or is it ford's fault if they did not remove the bits of broken thermostat before reconnecting new thermostat to hose ? Can i prove that the pump was working when i came in if i drove 25 miles with it ?Thanks for your help.
- On a cold day, with the heater on max heat will help, but ultimately its going to depend on how hard you drive the car and what kind of traffic you get stuck in. Its safer to get it towed, but you should be fine, just constantly watch your temp guage and when its gets around 3/4 turn the car off and let it cool. As for the thermostat, ask ford to see the new one they put in and see if the new one is the one that broke, or if it is the old one. If the new one is broken, they may simply try and replace only the thermostat as a faulty part. However if it is the old one that broke they should have flushed the system to clean out all the bits and pieces. Talk to the service manager and see what he says.
- Q: I replaced the water pump on my 2001 dodge dakota and I still have a leak coming from somewhere. I don't know if i put the bolts in the wrong holes or what. Some bolts were long and some were short. Is there a diagram that shows where which bolts go where?
- There are 4 long bolts that go all the way through the pump and and timing cover into the engine block. The rest are shorter but all the same length which seal the pump to the timing cover. You cannot put them in the wrong holes. The 4 long bolts do screw into water passages though. What has probably happened is you neglected to put sealant on the threads of the 4 long bolts that go into the coolant passages. If you put those 4 bolts in without sealant the coolant can weep right past the threads even if the bolts are tight and leak. Remove just those bolts 1 at a time and coat the threads with RTV or gasket sealing compound and re-install them then pressure check the system. Best of Luck!
- Q: Water pump "rated lift: 6m" what do you mean?
- Popularly speaking, "lift head" is the ability of water pump to lift water. 6m means that the pump can pump water to the height of 6m.
- Q: How do you measure and analyse the pump characteristics and efficiency?
- An automotive water pump consists of a steel shaft with an impeller (like a steamboat paddle wheel) on one end and a pulley flange on the other. The shaft spins on bearings located in a cast iron or aluminum housing. The housing has internal passages to allow the water to enter the impeller cavity and exit, often to a tube like structure (part of the housing casting) to which one of the rubber radiator hoses attaches. How it works is simple. Water present in the impeller cavity is confined and pushed to the outlet by the rotating vanes of the impeller. The rotation of the pump is usually driven by a belt powered by a pulley on the engine which turns a second pulley mounted to the pumps pulley flange. The characteristics might include things like, is the pump self priming or is it self lubricating? In an automotive system the answer to both questions is yes. To evaluate a pumps efficiency you would want to set up a test rig where you attach the pumps outlet to a long hose and use it to fill a calibrated container (one gallon, five gallons etc). Then with a stopwatch you can either time how long it takes to fill a gallon container or you can measure the volume of water pumped in a minute. Either way you will get useful information you can use to evaluate the pumps efficiency. You should repeat the above test at different engine RPM's to discover if the pump has peak efficiency (or lack of efficiency) at a particular RPM or range of RPM's. Finally, if you do this experiment for real be sure you add water as fast as you pump it out so you don't over heat the engine and damage it. Have fun.
- Q: What things in my car could the seizing of my water pump cause? As I stated in another question, the power steering went, the red battery light came on and it over heated. The mechanic said it seized and i'm lucky the engine didn't seize. He has to look into it more. I'm just really curious as to what kind of damage i've done and the possibilities! thanks in advance.
- It really depends on the car and how hot it got when it overheated. most likely you will need a new belt and of course a water-pump. Possibly you have cracked a cylinder head or warped it, this mostly occurs on aluminum cylinder heads and is unlikely if cylinder heads are iron.
- Q: It DID start after the Water Pump was put on. And i have not yet been able to detect a vacuum leak. The quot;whistling noiseseems consistent with RPMs, and the quot;dieseling(run-on) stopped in all but a rapid succession of 5 quick ~1-minute start/stops when the engine was fully warmed.. then it minorly ran-on.Could i be driving myself nuts over a Water Pump sound, and if it IS a Water Pump bearing, do i need a new Water Pump?1984 Chevy Camaro. 2.8 V6 carb'd 165,000 miles Auto.
- nicely, whilst you're like me you should make effective your self which you're turning out to be performed what ought to be performed. So, to locate precisely the place the noise is coming from, get your self a stethoscope. we are going to use component of backyard hose for this and it artwork great, 3-4 feet long. place one end on your ear and flow the different end around the engine (being careful of all shifting areas) the place you think of the noise is coming from. this variety you would be waiting to pinpoint the place the noise is and what section is making it. you would be attentive to you have discovered it whilst the noise is loudest. get rid of and replace. attempt this and that i assure you will locate the priority. you will be able to choose help revving the engine at those rpm you indicated. sturdy success!
- Q: can this happen that pump is pressurizing system and no flow in suction.
- Hi, It seems to me your question is miss- worded or it simply flew over over my head. I'm intending the same project when time is there for it. I m a' machine builder by trade as also an oilfeild welder so tend to trust my plans about design. My answer to your question is you can't suck water from a plugged pipe except one tiny amount that would create a vaccum. My plan is an inline hot water pump(automotive type) to go to and from the water heater while the pluming route may have radiators or other heat transfer sourses like plane pipeat various points of the house return in an open pipe flow lie.Thermostate control hooked tothe electric motor that drives the water pump
- Q: I have a 1999 Volkswagen Passat and the water pump seems to be leaking. The lower radiator hose has been replaced but it still leaks a fairly substantial amount. From what I can tell the pump is still doing its job but I'm losing coolant. Is there a way I can determine if i just need a new gasket or a new pump altogether without ripping the front end off? Any feedback is appreciated.
- The coolant can leak from the hoses, the core or pump. You can detect these external leaks from proper visual inspection (a mechanic) or a pressure test. If it still isn’t found then it’s the head gasket.
- Q: My 1999 ford taurus WATER pump and serpentine belt need to be replaced because I can't stir the stiring wheel .... Would you know approximately how much this could cost so I dont get ripped off ??? I know nothing about cars... and this mechanic is saying between 300$ to 400$ and that is wayyy too expensive . It was kinda obvious to him that I know nothing about carsTHANKS A LOT!!!
- Don't you really mean timing belt, water pump, and serpentine belt? Last time I paid someone to do that it was $415, and they reused my serpentine belt so add ~$20 extra for that. That was on an Escort, but I assume any other front wheel drive car would cost about the same.
