First, nothing operates at 100% efficiency. You are converting angular rotation into electric power and in any conversion of power, you lose efficiency. 59% efficiency isn't that bad. Second, generators are measured at continuous power and peak power. Check your owners manual or look on the side of the generator. At peak power, you will find that the efficiency is greater.

Is this generator going to be used in a location which is normally served by grid power. If so is it proposed to use the distribution system normally used when on the grid? If the answer to these questions is yes. The first step is to isolate the normal energy source. This has two purposes. a) to protect your equipment when power is restored and b) to protect people and equipment working on the external circuit. Once this is isolated wire the generator into the circuit (closing isolating switch if hard wired). Start the generator using normal procedures with minimal load in place. Slowly increase load until desired effect is achieved. When external power is returned. Slowly reduce load and isolate generator. Restore normal grid connection. Shut off generator.

If you mean the build-in pcb of a fuel/diesel generator which build-up voltage initially and then keep it stable under any load, then read this: First you need to see your generator minimum requirements to determine specs of AVR. You will probably found a label on generator with those Information: Ex. volt (maximum excitation voltage) Ex. amp (maximum excitation amperage) Your AVR output must exceed those specs. If generator is brushless type in most cases it does. Also input voltage of AVR must be the same as output of generator (ex. 110V110V, 220V220V). If generator is triple phase then you can do the same (ex. 380V380V, 440V440V) but if generator have output in star formation then you can use node for a smaller voltage of AVR (ex. 380V220V, 440V253V). If generator work in parallel operation (usually marine main generators does) then things get complicated. In this case AVR is good to support current transformer to make generator more elastic under load fluctuations and match other generators in the same circuit.

You still have the inefficiency of the gasoline fueled engine. Gas cars break down like this: 1/3 of the energy goes out the radiator as waste heat 1/3 of the energy goes out the exhaust pipe as waste heat 1/3 of the energy actually turns the crank shaft Now subtract from that final third the power to turn the water pump, oil pump, alternator, power steering pump and air conditioning. Then loose some more energy through friction losses in the drive train. If the car has an Automatic Transmission (A/T) add a little bit more loss to turn the fluid pump and the energy loss in the torque converter while the car is stopped. That constant push you feel while the A/T is in gear is lost energy exiting in the form of heat in the transmission fluid. That's why A/T have oil coolers. So only 20% to 25% of the total energy in that gallon of gas actually goes to pushing the car forward. I've seen reports that it is as low as 15%. See the waste?
