Q:Will this temperature affect the strength of steel component parts during the galvanizing process?
Steel is heat treated for some applications such as bearings, drill bits and cutting tools. Hot galvanizing occurs at 860F (when zinc is molten). Tool steels are likely to lose temper and hardness at this temperature. Common steels wouldn't be affected.
Q:can anyone tell me were i can find strontuim steel dowel pins?
Strontium steel is created by soaking a mild steel in strontium chromate, which has a pH of about 4 or 5, roughly the equivalent of acid rain. Chromate affects the cathodic reaction, with reduction of Cr6+ to Cr3+, and the surface film was composed of magnetite and hydrated chromium hydroxide. The Strontium is a radioactive isotope. The acid bath permeates the mild steel causing it to become mildly radioactive. Simular to oil imprengation of brass and other metals. Strontium Steel has a very high value of inhibition. However due to it's radioactive properties it is not a commonly used or manufactured material. As for where to actually obtain Strontium steel dowels. I have no idea i would speculate that you would have to purchase the raw stock and have it machined into a dowel for you.
Q:Does a Butcher's steel actually make your knives any sharper ?
It does work but unless your technique is right you can knacker your knives. I think it is around a 45degree angle. You also need a good quality, rough, steel, if it's smooth and cheap it won't work. Having said that I knew an old farmer who earned pocket money out of sharpening people's knives and scissors with a stone and he got immaculate results.

Q:Does mild steel rust?
Mild steel is an alloy. It is the most common form of steel. Mild steel (a so-called carbon steel) is a general term for a range of low carbon (a maximum of about 0.3%) steels that have good strength and can be bent, worked or can be welded into an endless variety of shapes for uses from vehicles (like cars and ships) to building materials. The carbon does not stop the material rusting or corroding. In addition to iron, carbon, and chromium, modern stainless steel may also contain other elements, such as nickel, niobium, molybdenum, and titanium. Nickel, molybdenum, niobium, and chromium enhance the corrosion resistance of stainless steel. It is the addition of a minimum of 12% chromium to the steel that makes it resist rust, or stain 'less' than other types of steel. The chromium in the steel combines with oxygen in the atmosphere to form a thin, invisible layer of chrome-containing oxide, called the passive film. The sizes of chromium atoms and their oxides are similar, so they pack neatly together on the surface of the metal, forming a stable layer only a few atoms thick. If the metal is cut or scratched and the passive film is disrupted, more oxide will quickly form and recover the exposed surface, protecting it from oxidative corrosion.

Cromargan was the company's fantasy name for stainless Krupp V2A steel. Page 86 (unfortunately WMF is a German company, the booklet therefore is in German). Has nice pictures anyways. Q:Can you WELD STEEL to ALUMINUM? How much heavier/stronger is STEEL?
I can't weld steel to aluminum, and generally speaking I'd say the answer is no, however, there are some special procedures that can make a metallic bond between steel and aluminum, it can be done with explosive welding. A lot of multi-ply cookware is made with aluminum sandwiched between stainless steel, there is so much of it that I imagine there is another way besides explosives, but I don't know what. In any case it is not a normal workshop procedure. Steel is often considerably easier to weld, but it depends on the alloy. some steels are difficult to weld and some aluminum alloys are fairly easy, but on the average steel is easier. as far as brittle/ flexible it again depend on the alloy, some steels are less brittle than some aluminum alloys and the other way around. Steel does have a higher modulus of elasticity, so for a given size steel is stiffer, but that is for elastic deformation, for plastic deformation steel often has a higher yield strength, but some of the more exotic aluminum alloys can be stronger than low grades of steel.
Q:Should I keep my steel cents as an investment?
They'd never be worth much for their steel content, likely always less than face value. They might be worth a premium as coins, but not anything you'd call an investment.
