- Q:I do a lot of scrapping and would like to be able to separate stainless steel from regular steel. The magnet test doesn't always work since stainless can be magnetic, but what are some ways that I can for sure tell the difference? Or even something like a sound that they make that may help me to tell the difference.

- It depends on the tool steel you are referring to and the function of the sword. L6 steel is a modern tool steel that a few smiths are using (Howard Clark, MAS, etc.), which produces some amazing swords that are both tough and flexible, but very few smiths are qualified to work with it and it is easy to screw up the heat treatment. T10 is another tool steel used by a few larger manufacturers (Paul Chen, etc.), which has a very high carbon content and includes a tungsten ally which makes it very tough and a little more resilient then 1095 carbon steel, however, as with any very high carbon steel, they may be durable but may also chip or break. 1060 and 1075 is the standard steel for most modern production swords since they provide a good balance between hardness, and durability. Spring steel is good if you are concerned about a sword taking a lateral bend, but is only really necessary if you do a lot of tameshigiri and have not yet developed a consistent hasuji.
- Q:I was wondering if anyone knew the grade/type of steel for this product. I'd like to use it as stock for a knife blade, but would like to know the specs so I can determine if it is suitable and, if so, how best to heat treat it.Thanks.PS: I know it isn't stainless, but that leaves a lot of other steel types.
- 1018 mild steel. Not suitable for bladesmithing. If you can't heat treat find an old file, grind it out (keep it cool) and put in an oven 400F. Modern car/truck springs are 5160 med chrome steel, a good blade quality steel and forgiving on the anvil/heat treat.
- Q:Are Steel Building Kits really helpful while erecting a steel building?
- I put up a 30'x40' Mueller Steel Building from a bolt together kit 6 yrs ago. Fully insulated, 2 10'x10' roll up doors, 1 walk thru door, 3 windows, 2' overhang all around, and gutters. The building price minus the slab was about $9500. The only special equipment was a neighbor's large Farmall with a hay spike on the FEL that we used to lift the trusses in place. Then it was mainly cordless drills to put in LOTS of self tapping screws, circular saw with metal cutting blade, tall ladders, etc. Had help putting up the trusses and putting up the roof panels. Everything else I did by myself. Took about 6 wks, but that was only working weekends and maybe 3 evenings a week since that land is 30 miles from my house. Would have gone a lot faster with at least one helper.

- First check if the Stainless Steel is solid or just some base metal plated with SS. SS has many SAE steel grades(304,316,316L,etc) but in general most will not rust if you do not immerse in sea/salt water over long period. Some can tone to grey over time but IMO that will only add more aesthetic value to the necklace. Yes, you can shower wearing SS because sometimes I also do that wearing my SS dive watches.

- Three answers you have stated that stainless steel doesn't rust. That isn't solely true, because there is one type that doesn't rust is often used on marine products such as yachts rigging's etc its' the 316 grade 304 302 301 do actually rust big time! Cheers!!
