- If you are doing the tile work yourself, it will be cheaper than having one of those fiberglass shower enclosures put in. You are looking at the cost of tile (at $1/sqft.), grout ($10 or less), permabase/durock ($9 per 3x5 sheet), mastic ($30 for high quality), and caulk ($4), to get the job done. On an average size shower, this will bring your total material bill in at right around $200. This is based on entirely ripping out your old shower walls (back to the studs), and building an entirely new shower. A complete rennovation for $200. This is what I do for a living, and I can honestly tell you that you will save tons if you are handy enough to do this yourself. One side note on the pre-fab showers (fiberglass, urethane, etc) - we get a lot of calls to come out and remove mold from these types of enclosures. On most that I've seen there are a lot of corners and small nooks that moisture gathers up and sits in. Just something to watch out for should you go that method. Good luck to you, either way.

- I would indeed tile the ceiling. Just be sure the bathroom is well vented with all the hot steam in the room. Just search for good easy cleaners. simple windex on the ceiling? not much soap up there?

- Q:I‘m tiling my bathroom shower and need to cut holes for the shower head and body sprayers. I‘m using porcelain tile and I‘m not having any luck cutting the holes. I‘ve bought a couple holes saw bits that say they are for porcelain, but they just don‘t seem to be doing the job. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
- I cut ,and you can too, all my porcelains and ceramic tile w/ a wet saw. I mark front and back w/ a permanent marker. I mark a 1 to a 1/1/4 hole . I make a square . Front of the tile I just score it good w/ a wet saw. In this case the smaller the blade the better. Then I flip the tile over and hold the tile w/ my arm w/ my fingers over the scored front holes. Then I plunge cut each side of the hole carefully. Just letting the blade come thru. It won t cut your fingers .. Once you have all 4 side cut, you can tap the hole out or carefully cut it more until it falls out. They also make a small dry saw that has a 4 blade that will work, since I ve also used mine 100 s of times this way too if my wet saw wasn t set up. - Q:i was pouring grout on my tile floor and it dryed too fast. how can i get rid of it?
- Moisten the joints between the tiles with a little bit of water. This makes the grout naturally flow into the crevices and away from the face of your tile. Work in small sections, cleaning the surface of the tile as you go. The longer you wait, the more the grout will set and the harder it will be to remove. Clean the tiles with a damp sponge. After you apply the grout to the joints of the tiles, use a damp sponge to wipe the surface of each tile clean. You may want to go over it a few times to make sure that no excess grout remains. Sweep all the grout to one area, and then wipe it with a rag if necessary. Find a pH balanced cleanser. If grout or residue still remains on the tile, use a gentle cleaner to scrub the surface. If you left the grout on too long and it cured on the tile, you may need an acid-based solution.
- Q:I need to install tiles on the floors of a 500 square foot apartment. I am torn between ceramic tile and vinyl. What is the price differential in terms of materials and labor? - vinyl tile would be a lot cheaper..off the top of my head and if the place is empty and the floor that the vinyl tile is going over is in good shape,you are probably looking at around 800 dollars........ceramic maybe 3 to 4 thousand......these figures are far from exact but the vinyl tiles could probably be finished in a day,whereas, the ceramic could take 4 to 5 days in all.........

- If I were you, I would replace the cabinets first. That will make the rest of your measuring easier. It would be even better to just plain strip everything out of the kitchen and lay the floor first, then the cabinets and tile. But that is assuming you won't need the kitchen for a few days.

- Porcelain is much better quality. The design goes through and though, not just a glaze on top like ceramic. I love tile, but granite is beautiful. I have formica and I like it but don't love it.
