Q:I have some extra granite tiles, and want to get them trimmed to the dimensions I want. I lack a wet saw, and don‘t want to buy one, so is there somewhere I can go to get it done?: I'm pretty sure that a hardware store will do that for you like Lowe's or Home Depot. You would just need to pay for a cutting charge per piece.

Q:I am installing 4x4 ceramic tiles on a shower wall. I have been using a 1/4 x 1/4 sq. notch trowel, but am having trouble with the tiles staying put...should I use a 3/16 x 5/32 v-notch trowel instead?: Mike and Rob are correct - 1/4 square notch for a 4x4 tile. A 4x4 ceramic is a pretty light tile, if they're not sticking, there's an issue with your technique. You should be using a modified thinset (do NOT use pre-mixed (the stuff in a tub) thinset - it's actually a water-based adhesive and it will NOT last in wet areas ), mixed to the consistencey of peanut butter. A common DIY'er mistake is to mix their mortar too wet. First apply the thinset to the wall with the smooth edge of the trowel and work it back and forth a couple times. This keys the mortar into the backer board (you are applying over cement backer board, right?) for good adhesion to the wall. Then using the notched edge, held at a consistent 45 degree angle to the wall, remove the excess mortar. And work in small sections - with 4x4 tiles, apply the thinset in 2' squares -- otherwise the thinset will set up (and loose adhesion) before you get all the tiles in place. Small batches goes for mixing the thinset, too. Check the label, but most thinsets have a 1-2 hour pot time (how long it can sit in the bucket before it sets up) -- exceed that and the mortar will loose it's adhesion and the tiles won't stick. You can simplify wall tile installation by screwing a starter board to the wall (1x2 or strip of plywood works well), 3-4 courses up from the floor. This will support your first course, and tile spacers will support succesive courses. Then remove the board and finish up the bottom courses.

Q:Hey there. We are in the process of adding a half bath to our home. We purchased tiles months ago at a tent sale at out local tile store. We have some wall corners that might require bullnosed corner tiles but this wasnt taken into account when we purchased the tiles and now we cannot find matching bullnose tiles anywhere.......Is there any was to finish the wall edges without using bullnosed tiles and have it still look good???: Bnose tile is a new simplified way of doing tile and was to remove one of the grout edges. So all you have to do is grout the top like they did in the old days a few years ago. You could also use a thin lat of flat trim, a brass or stainless steel edging, or caulking that matches the wall or tile. I think the simple grout is your best bet. PS. Where corners meet If the tile is same color through they can show. If it is glazed colored or just a thin color on top then no. In that case cut the tile back so that they do not quite reach the corner. Then there will be a slight inverted corner where you will grout or caulk. In neither case would you want to miter the corner. It will be too sharp and thin corners would be weak enough to chip.

Q:I don‘t have a ton of money for my kitchen but I feel I can do some minor things. I) Orange countertop MUST go. I am seriously considering due the lack of counter space in the kitchen, what you see is my only countertop space, is move the fridge to the wall on the right, which you cant realy see in this pic, but there is an inside interior wall im going to set the fridge against, and then extend the countertop the wall, and put a base cabinet below it, and one above it to be the same size vertically as the one next to the fridge. A neutral beige-ish countertop, and then probably a range top thing for above the stove. Replace old sink faucet too.My question about making a tile backsplash for above the sink, would ie be more logical to measure it out, and put the tiles on a piece of plywood and screw that 2 the wall instead of grouting the wall and tiles affixed to the wall directly.: With all due respect to others answers, some valid, and to you, and even to the installer, and after having installed thousands of sq. ft. of tile, and miles of grout lines, I have a few things to offer. First of all the installer may have just been a SUB, and not at all liable for what YOU chose. Second: Without knowing the dealer I suggest that any Decent / vaild / reliable Tile sellers would currently have Grout samples of the REAL color choices. Those are usually in a demo kit type form in 1/4 inch strips, maybe 4 inches long. With no offense to you, choosing a grout color from a card is like choosing a paint color from a card, and I've applied thousand of gallons of paint as well. At this point the tile grout stain may be your best option, and may in fact work for awhile over sealed grout. in any case it will be an issue you may have to maintain, just as you would a normal cleaning program for any tile surface and even sealer isn't a forever thing. Personally I don't use sealer. I use a quality poly blend, sanded grout, that once set needs no more than proper cleaning on a regular basis. Steven Wolf

Q:Hi, I`m planning a bathroom remodel soon, and I want to use the same floor tiles as before - they are beautiful! But I just can`t find them anywhere (we bought this house recently and the previous owner did the remodel, and we can`t get hold of him any more). If anyone recognizes them, I`d be really grateful if you could point me in the direction of where to find them. Thank you SO much!Further info: the tiles are a fraction under 4 square and are a kind of gray-based quartz or granite (not sure of the difference, sorry!) with flecks of aquamarine and blue that give it an overall pale blue hue. They sit between plain white tiles with the corners shaped to accept the smaller blue squares.I`ve looked in Lowes, Home Depot, Amazon and online but so far no luck :( !: You will have to contact a company and request a catalog of their tiles that they manufacture. After a run of tiles are made the next run will not be the exact same to match. It's very possible that no manufacturing tile company is still making the tile. With the wear and glaze that the tile has it would be impossible to get a match. I suggest that you shop for tiles that will enhance and blend with what you have and you may even use hard wood and tile aquamarine color that will pull the color hue from your present tile. Q:Hello. To clean a fridge water was poured on the lower section . The water spilled out onto the floor where white tiles are. I left for a minute and came back and saw that the white tiles had grey blotches or spots. What happened, and how can I cure this?: Tile won t stain under normal circumstances so I suspect the glaze is a bit worn off rt in front of the fridge.. That can be a wet spot that will dry eventually or stain the tile body in which you have no choice but to r and r the tile(s).. GL

Q:I found answers about laying tile and a backer board over linoleum I didn‘t know if they would be the same. What would cause tile to crack if it‘s places directly on concrete?: remove the vinyl tiles. There are great products that will help with loosening the tiles. should you decide to not remove the tiles this is what could happen. the tiles will move under the ceramic floor and cause cracks in the tiles. replacing the grout is easy not the tiles. if you start with a sound floor then you will have a ceramic floor that will last you for a good long time.
