Q: I have a bathtub that the bottom row of tiles are getting loose on the top portion. A few have come out.The row above seems ok.Can the bottom row be resealed or replaced without interfering with the upper tiles?If so how?: Yes. I just did that very job recently. Use a masonry chisel and a rubber mallet to breakaway the remaining tiles along the bottom row by tapping the chisel lightly across the top and sides of the tiles. Be sure to hold the tiles directly connected to the one you are removing firmly against the wall as you gently pry the tile loose. If you pull any tiles away from wall they will also need to be removed and replaced as well. Carefully knock off all of the old grout and the old adhesive left on the wall. Clean and dry wall apply replacement tiles with tile adhesive/grout mix. use rubber tile spacers to keep the new tiles aligned while they set up. Remove spacers after 30 minutes and lightly rub off the excess grout with a tile float and damp sponge. Let dry overnight and buff with a clean towel. apply grout sealer and caulk along edge of tub and corners to insure a good waterproof seal. Good luck.

Q: HI ,THIS IS MY FIRST TILE PROJECT. I AM INSTALLING A BACKSPLASH ON SHEETROCK USING 4.5X4.5 PORCELAIN TILES. USING OMNIGRIP MASTIC APPLIED WITH A 1/4 X 3/16 V-NOTCH TROWEL. THE TILES HAVE A WAFFLE BACK. MY CONCERN IS DO I HAVE TO FILL IN THE WAFFLE DEPRESSIONS,WHICH SEEM TO BE 1/16 DEEP,BY BACK BUTTERING PRIOR TO APPLYING TILE TO COMBED MASTIC. ALSO, IS THE TROWEL SIZE CORRECT?P.S. WHY DO SOME TILES HAVE A WAFFLED BACK AND SOME A PRACTICALLY FLAT BACK? THANKS!: Yes the trowel you have is the correct one for a mastic. And you have 2 options, spread some mastic and set a tile to see how the coverage is after you remove the tile. Set in place and give a gentle twisting motion, remove tile and if you have 80% coverage or better you good to go.If not you ll have to back butter the tile .. I can t tell you any other way because I don t know just how deep the pattern is.. As to why they have the waffle pattern, it foe a couple reasons.. One is for body strength after a glue or thin set fills this void. The other is an identifying type mark .. I can tell different tiles by their pattern at times.. Q: I just mortared some very porous tiles down and i‘m ready to grout. I‘ve used these tiles before and noticed it‘s pretty tough to get the haze to go away. Should i pre-seal the tile before grouting? if so, what brand or name? Also, do i still use a grout haze remover if needed? And lastly what is your recommended tile sealer to finish the job?: Pre Sealed Grout

Q: We are looking to buy a house and we‘re choosing between tile and hardwood floor. I prefer hardwood because I feel its easier to clean and more comfortable. Husband prefers the tile. Is it just personal preference or is one better than another, cleaning wise.: Pros and Cons: 1)Porcelaine and ceramic tile are harder and will wear better with sand and water. However, you have grout to deal with (seal it and use the right cleaners and that wont be a big con) 2) Wood is beautiful and warm. It can warp with moisture, and scratch, especially with sand. Of course durability should be an issue, and it really depends on how much sand you will track in, and how much moisture will be on the floor. They do make some tiles that look like wood. One that is really nice is Interceramic's Timberland series. That might be a nice compromise.

Q: Anyone know if that type of ceiling tile has asbestos? Unsure of the year built. It has a texture to it which is why I‘m worried about it.: No. That looks like just ordinary lay in ceiling tile. Texture is not really and indication of asbestos. Lots of things have texture that are not asbestos.

Q: The tiles are textured and it seems that the high spots are wearing and can not be cleaned. Is this caused by inexpensive tiles?Texturing? Will I have to replace the floor? What product should I use? Any information will be appreacated.: Sounds like whoever installed the tile did not use floor tile, they are the same color top to bottom, throughout. The tile you now have sounds like wall tile and only has the coloration on the top of the tile. You have two possible solutions to this problem. Replace the tile, or a cheaper fix that will not be permanent, is to finish the floor with semigloss polyurethane which will also wear out. High gloss will be very slick when wet, but depending on the sheen of the current tile you may decide to use that instead. The polyurethane will slightly change the color of your floor, and should be considered when you make your decision.

Q: I have thinset my slate tiles in place, and washed any thin set off as best as I can with water. I can‘t seem to get some of the thinset marks off, how important is this? Also, how long should I let the tiles dry before I can seal them? (I want to seal before grouting). One last thing, my sealer product says to grout 2 hours after sealing? This seems fast...will the sealer be dry enough?: Ideally you could have sealed your slate before setting (as long as you kept the sealer off the edges of the tiles). This would have made thinset and grout clean-up much easier. You really need to get all the thinset off your tiles. At this point you might need some hot water, a scrungy pad and some elbow grease. If that doesn't do it then you'll need to use a cleaning solution - maybe they have something where you bought the slate (make sure it's safe for natural stone). So after the tiles are thinset free, you can seal - again only the tops of the tile. If sealer gets down the sides your grout will not grab hold as well. Apply enough sealer to coat, but avoid puddling. You can grout after 2 hrs - but you can wait longer if you like. I would seal your grout after it dries as well. Hope this helped... Rich

Q: Can you put linoleum over tile?: why do renters think they own the house and can do anything they want? IT IS NOT YOUR FLOOR! read your rental agreement I am sure it says you cannot start building things or changing the structure without permission. ask your landlord first or forget about getting your security deposit back or maybe get a big bill to repair what you ruined. I think you mean vinyl flooring real linoleum is old and very expensive. to put vinyl down the floor must be perfectly flat otherwise the pattern will show through and it will probably rip. you would have to mud it to make it flat first. Go check what it would cost to have it mudded and have vinyl installed. I think you might decide it is not so ugly after all

Q: We grouted the tile, and also had a border tile up.. the border is decorative and has some texture to it.We did wipe off the excess as we grouted. The next day tho, my brother sealed it, before making sure all the dust was off.. now there is some grout dust sealed onto the border tile. I scrubbed with a toothbrush, and managed to get some of it off.. but not all.Is there anything I can do to remove the grout, or even the seal, without ruining the finish on the tile??: If the dust is right on the surface of the tile, use an acid to remove it such as CLR purchased at your grocer or white vinegar, which if the grout dust is thin, will also dissolve it. The layer of silicone sealant is so thin that the CLR or white vinegar will penetrate it easily and the grout will dissolve. The surface of the tile will not be attacked by CLR or white vinegar. If the dust in in the grout or if the grout is uneven, Dust, or even imperfections such as ridges, can easily be smoothed out in tile grout. Take a sheet of 120 grit sand paper and fold it back several times until it forms a rounded edge suitable to sand on the tile grouting. Sand out the dust or imperfections with that sand paper. This is commonly done in tiling installations where some imperfection is present. You can either leave as is after sanding or reskim a coat of grout over and then reseal.
