- Q: My parents want to re-tile their bathroom. My dad says he can use regular tiles in the bathroom, bathroom being the floor and the open-shower walls(the only thing stopping the water spillage is plastic and fabric on a rail), but my mom says it needs bathroom tiles and bathroom grout for the job. Any help would definitely be appreciated!!!
- There's no such thing as bathroom tiles or bathroom grout. You can use any kind of ceramic, glass, or porcelain tile in a bathroom. If you use something porous, like a natural stone, there are extra steps involved to make it waterproof. Also, if you are tiling the floor, don't use glass tiles (they will become scratched) or tiles that will become slippery when wet. The most important thing when tiling a bathroom is to prepare it well and don't skip any steps. All surfaces that are to be tiled must be covered with cement backer board. Tape and glue the seams and allow it to dry. Then, you can lay your tile and grout it. Make sure that you seal the grout! This is the step that many people forget and if you do forget it, your grout will be flaking off in a matter of months. Depending on which sealer you use, you may have to wait 1-3 days to use the bathroom after it is sealed. This allows the sealer to develop a water-tight surface. Also, don't grout corners. Corners should be caulked with bathroom caulk. The caulk allows the tiles to expand and contract with changes in temperature. If you just grout the whole thing, there's no room for the tiles to expand and contract and your grout can fracture. Good luck!
- Q: I am planning on tiling the backsplash area of my kitchen. I am using 6x6 ceramic porecelin tile (roman stone). The dimensions of the area is 17x60. When i went to scrape the original paint off of the wall I will be tiling, the first thin layer of the drywall came off with the paint. This layer is paper thin. I went to Home Depot and they told me to use Zissner 123 sealer. I put on two coats and the wall seems sealed pretty good. I will be using Mastic as my adhesive. Do you think that I will be ok tiling three tiles high (first tile is laying on the granite countertop) without using a backerboard. Will the drywall be able to hold the mastic/tile even though I ripped off a thin layer of drywall but sealed it with 123 sealer?
- If you have it sealed w/ a primer( Zissner is fine) , you ll be fine. All mastic needs is a painted surface to adhere to. The use of backerboard isn t needed in this case , since its a non wet area. Using a mastic and a v notched trowel w/ some porcelains , watch that the back of the tile isnt indented so you get a good bond. Your plan of attack sounds fine ( 3 tiles high starting at the counter top.I like to use a smaller grout joint on some thing like this too (1/8 th or 3/16 ths) Any questions you can e mail me thru my avatar and check my qualifications GL
- Q: I have some ceramic tiles in my kitchen floor that I would like to paint. Would this be possible?
- If you go to the DIY store I would think you would get paint especially for the job. When you have a smooth surface to get paint or varnish to stick to it you need to give it a key (ie use sand paper to give it something to grip) This wouldnt work here as it would damage your tiles. Another thought is you get these transfers which are just squares a different colour that you can put on tiles maybe that would be worth a go.
- Q: but now we have decided to probably go with laminate tile in each. Mainly time is the big thing, I know I can put that in but not sure about tile. Anyways is this a good decision. Does anyone have experience with laminate tile and if so can you recommend where or what brand to look at. Also can you give me an idea of pricing..Thanks...
- Laminate Tile will only be as good as the prep you do before you lay it. To prep your floor, make sure there are not anything popping up through the floor ,clean it very well and vacuum well and let it dry and do it again. Buy some Vinyl floor primer and use as directed. also buy some tile floor sealer for the seams, it looks like model glue in a bottle. The primer makes the tile stick better and the sealer keeps dirt and water from getting under the tile and pealing it up. Where do you put the first tile, Try this. as you casually walk into your bathroom look down and see where your first step is as you enter,This is where you start, It is better to make the first step on a whole tile then on a crack or seem. center this first tile and go from there.

- Over all tile is more expensive when installed. Tile you can buy cheaper on average,on a per square foot basis, but when you factor in prep and setting materials on the average job, the s/f price gos up. Labor alone is approximately double per s/f for tile than it is for wood. Several factors can change this but the norm is tile can be almost double ( installed price) than hard wood. This all is when you have some one else install it. DIY can cut the price on tile way down , but over all still more expensive, Any questions you can e mail me through my avatar. GL
- Q: CAN I LAY TILE WITH NO GROUT LINES?
- If its in a no moisture area . May be . But unless its Trazo or Granite square cut on . And I only do that on counter tops. If you don't seal seal with grout water can get in cracks and cause problems with tile adhesion and sub floor failure. I'd use the thin grout lines.
- Q: I have stark white tiles in my kitchen bathroom, would like to spruce it up but I don‘t want it to look like a sticker. Has anyone used these? Do they look cheap, like a sticker on a tile? do they come off easy or do they leave a residue?
- We had our whole kitchen wall covered with white glossy tiles when we purchased it and as my Mother said it looks like a Hospital wall. We looked around and found some hand painted colorful tiles and also others with different styles of prints baked onto them. By removing several tiles and carefully replacing them with the newer ones then grouting them, it brought the room to life. If the house is rented or leased I don't think it would be wise to do what we did unless you get the OK from the owner etc. Certain transfers and decals would look OK and can easily be removed if and when you need to. Dampen them and they can be scraped off carefully with a Razor Blade scraper gently leaving no residue after wards. If they do just clean it off with metho or similar etc.
- Q: The hammer took a chip out of one tile, the chip is about the size of a pencil eraser. I‘m just heartbroken as we just had this tile installed 12 days ago! Is there any way to fix this- short of replacing the tile? I‘ve already bought a rug that will cover the hole but I‘d still like to fix it if I can. - short of replacing the tile, you might try super gluing the chip back into the tile. but thats about all you can do.

- Tile can be used pretty much anywhere. The tile weight is going to be spread out over the entire floor surface and the floor rafters can easily support the weight. Perhaps Mom Dad may not want to make the investment (it is expensive for labor materials)
