- Q: My car, a Mercedes 1996 C280 has a check engine light on. I‘ve looked at the common problems first like checking the oil, but everything seems fine. I want to find out what the problem out myself without having to spend the money. I heard that I can input a code and the number of times the dashboard flashes is the answer, but I have no idea how to do anything like that.
- Call Auto Zone, or other auto parts retailers. Not sure about a Mercedes, but for most cars they will read the computer codes for you for free. It probably is a sensor for the emission control system. Good luck with it.
- Q: This morning I was driving my girlfriend to work and the check engine light came on. Took it to the auto parts store to get it scanned and it gave me a code of P0440 Evaporative Emissions System. I texted ChaCha and asked them how to fix the problem. They answered back and said Remove and reinstall the gas cap, clear the codes, and drive for a day and see if the codes come back. This should fix the problem. To me it seems like that fix wouldn‘t work but I was wondering if that‘s true? If not, how do I fix the problem?Btw, I have a 1996 Pontiac Sunfire SE 2.2L
- P0440 is one of several evaporative emissions leak codes. A loose (or cross-threaded) gas cap is the most common cause, and certainly the cheapest thing to try first. It may take a couple of days for the code to clear by itself, so don't be in too much of a hurry to try something else.
- Q: I have a 92 toyota Camry I would like to knw y the check engine light truns on and off any1 knw Y?
- ive got nothing on pro mechanic Davey but like my famalies Nissan Pathfinder and GMC Jimmy they check engine light runs on all the time because the gas cap is put back on improper. weve been told that several times. so you can check that minor thing if you wanted too.
- Q: My engine light came on 3 days ago.I took my car to Auto Zone they hooked up a scope and it read it was the gas cap.I cleaned the gas cap and the surronding area of the cap area.He turned to senser light at my request and the next day the light came on again.I live 90 miles away from a Toyota dealer.Does anyone have anymore suggestions?
- There is ABSOLUTELY NO WAY to tell if the Gas cap is causing your Check Engine Light to come on using the OBDII tester (they don't have a scope at Auto Zone). You would need to Visualy inspect (was the gasket GONE) or use a Fuel Cap pressure tester to verify. What they did find out, was that the CODE recorded in your computer had something to do with an Evaporative System Leak (I hope). Of more use would be to post here the actual Code (or codes) P0xxx that they did retrieve from your computer. If you don't have it go back and have them read the codes again and Post your story again. BTW. it is against state law for Autozone or other auto parts stores that are not a licenesed REPAIR center (In California) to turn off the Check Engine light. (Turning off the light is a repair and they are not licensed to do repairs) Now YOU can turn the light off with their computer. Do not buy any parts based solely on having the codes read. Up to 40% of the time the code is telling you that the Device (for example an O2 sensor) is working perfectly and reporting (sensing) a problem that is occuring earlier in the process. DIAGNOSIS tells you what the problem isnot the symptom (the code is a symptom). Find the codes from last time or have them read again and REPOST your request. If it is someting bigger then it most likely will be covered under your 8 year 80,000 mile warranty that all cars in the US have (Except CA only cars they only get 7/70)
- Q: The goal here is just having cars see us, not headlights etc. battery operated Christmas lights might work, but i am afraid because of the cold weather, the AA batteries would run out quickly, and may not be bright enough so cars can really see us. I just would like to prevent an accident while on the town streets. Thanks in advance for your help. Any kind of lighting or battery system could work here.
- LED Long Duration Lantern Lowes sells them for about $15 that will run for over 120 hours on a single set of batteries. They also have a mode that you can set them for white, yellow or flashing yellow.
- Q: what does ecu light mean in a 08 dodge magnum?
- its the check engine light basically ,all it does is monitor the emission system and a few of the electrical system that operate the car,if it comes on then it means there's a problem with it,auto zone or advance auto either one will scan the computer free of charge for you and tell you why the light came on,its comes on normally when you first turn the key on and should go off once the car is started, good luck
- Q: Today, while my car was stopped at a red light, my parking brake indicator light and my battery light both went on at the same time, and have stayed on. My battery is relatively new and my car is acting normal otherwise. Is it my alternator? Is it safe to drive until I can get it fixed? I have a 2005 Nissan Sentra.
- with the battery, i think of that the loaded idle is dropping under a element to the place voltage is under the conventional. as for the brake easy, i do no longer see link to that concept, until you have a quick at the back of the sprint.
- Q: can you change the gauges light, because i have green gauges but i want to know if i can install a blue light. also what kind of audio system would you suggest for the escape because it is a double deck? oh and how much would tints cost for my windows??
- Check out your nearest auto parts store. Most carry a selection of lights. You can change the light to any color that is available. The audio system would depend on what you want in your SUV. There are many to choose from with different options. Most places will charge atleast $100 for a tint but some will offer discounts if doing more windows. Check your area or ask your buddies for a reliable place to go.
- Q: an emissions control leak (small). im not sure of the exact code. they told me to get a new gas cap and i should be fine. so i did and the code came back on. i went back and had them turn it off twice and it is still coming back on. what does this mean and how much would it cost to fix it? thanks.
- The system checks the evaporator system. This is what takes the gas fumes and puts them back in the gas tank. It has several vacuum hoses that could be leaking. That's the problem with having a parts person try and fix your car. The code reader only says what could be wrong, So unless you look at everything that also could cause the problem your only guesing. Is a hose broken is the vacuum canister cracked? Why it may seem cheap and easy to go and get a free diagnossis keep in mind that you get what you pay for is more than just a funny saying. Find a reliable mechanic and have him check you evap system with a smoke machine.
- Q: Hi, I recently got my VW Jetta an oil change and tire rotation. However, the dealer said my engine light is still on and needs more maintenance to fix that. They said it possibly could be my gas cap not being on tight enough letting too much air into the tank causing the light to come up. I just got it scanned at auto-zone, and the code that came up was: P2432. It said something about air flow or fuel injection. How much do you think this would cost if I took it back to the dealer? Should I take it to a non VW mechanic and do it for cheap? Any experts on VW Jettas would be much appreciated.
