- Don't you just love dorm walls? I use Command strips. After I bought my house, we have plaster walls and getting things to hang on it sometimes damages it. So I use the Comman strips on that too. Usually I use the ones that have the double sided velcro and you can buy them in variations of weight. I also use two of the 5lb hooks to hang my ironing board on the linen closet door. Every thing in my house is hung with command strips because they are sturdy, durable and don't damage the walls. Try those - they are quick and easy to put up and take down. You can get them at any discount store or home store. They are just fantastic!

- You can attach the board with screws, they make special screws for it, however those seem to tear through the webbing that adds strength to the cement board so I always use nails...use gavanized roofing nails, I normally use 1-1/2 roofing nails. Another option if it is just a kitchen wall or a back splash is using mastic and applying the tile right onto the drywall. You want to make sure if you put the tile on the sheetrock to use mastic and not thinset.

- Cut out the area where backerboard is going to be to the studs. Cut backerboard to size and sink with 5/8 or 3/4 inch drywall screws

- That is the proper way to do it. You need the thin set to act as a filler so there are no voids at all between the ply and the cement board. 1/4x1/4 notched trowel is the required trowel. This is according to tile installation ( both ATC and TCA tile guide line codes) and the cement board manufactures way to do it. - Q: I've already got the cement board down, taking it back up would mean messing with the toilet flange, which means plumbing, and that sucks. Plywood was in pretty good condition. Thanks in advance!
- If you don't apply mortar, the tile will shift around, come up, etc. It's best to go ahead and do it right when you are initially laying it therefore saving yourself a costlier repair. Good luck.
- Q: I am seeking to set porcelain tile on top of the hardibacker board once it is secured. If I have to remove the Barmaill plywood, does anyone have any suggestions on how to do this with ease? I assume its glued as well as screwed down.
- I have used a modified thinset to ..... set the cement boards and it didn't stop a crack from forming at a beam. SO I guess what I'm saying is. move on using a GOOD modified thin set mortar. you will be fine. But stuff happens. you are skipping the safety...... but I would live dangerously.
- Q: We are remodeling our Bath and have put cement board around the shower which we will tile. My question is, do I continue to use cement board around the remainder of the bath or put up green board. The cement board in only 1/4 inch. Can I get greenboard that is 1/4 in. thick? I don't want a ridge between were the two meet. The tile will run half way up the wall and the other half painted in the remaining part of the bath.
- If you are installing ceramic tile then you definitely need to use cement board in the shower/tub area. Green board with ceramic tile would be okay for other parts of the bathroom walls, but not in the shower/tub. Green board is water resistant, but it is not really waterproof and should not be used in a shower. Cement board is not affected at all by water so it is great to use in shower.

- First consider the term 'phase' as in 'phase change', such as ice melting. It means a particular state of matter, solid or liquid in the melting of ice. However, in an inhomogenous solid material you can have two or more solid phases. For instance, Transite insulation board was made of portland cement and asbestos [not in use much nowadays]. So what you have is some two phase inhomogenous solid consisting of one phase as binder or cement, and the other phase could be a filler, a fiber, or whatever.
