- Q:Hi! I have three brass gate valves surrounding a filter for my well. They are starting to show some signs of leaking. I realize that I might need to replace them... or, there seems to be a couple of places where they could be adjusted. Is this something I should do? Or, if I need to replace them, can you help me put a name to this type of valve so I can have an easier time tracking them down ?
- The little brass nut under the handle is the packing nut. It compresses a packing material like Teflon or a graphite based twine or rope to tighten up around the stem. That is what keeps it from leaking. You can tighten this nut gently to stop leakage. That is what it's for. Just snug it up a little and it should stop leaking. The inline connections are simply hose threads, tightened by hand or snugged up with some wrenches. The small cap on the side of the valve is to drain or vent the branch line. It is simply finger tight. The valve is a 'Stop Waste' valve.

- time to change oil, use thicker oil or yep, adjust valves. not a monstrous project but time consuming. Need torque wrench, valve cover gasket and shim kit to adjust. It's a pain as u have two nuts on each valve adjustment rocker bolt. tightening causes the lower one to drop sometimes so u may find yourself adjusting the valves 2-3 times each. I did it on my old Acura with 78K miles. ran smoother. i dropped in a pulley kit and cold intake as well but afterwards. the head was real clean as I change oil regularly. I had tapping even after changing the knock valve so I knew the valve job was needed.

- remove valve covers, watch front left two lifters and turn engine, by bolt that holds harmonic dampener to front of crankshaft, so mark on dampener lines up with mark on front cover. If rocker arms do not move as marks line up engine should be on top dead center number 1 cylinder. Now you can adjust exhaust valves 1, 3, 4, 8 and intake valves 1, 2, 5, 7 [ odd numbers are on the left bank from the front 1,3,5,7 even on the right bank from the front 2,4,6,8]. Adjust by turning nut in rocker arm out until movement is felt than tighten until all movement is gone and tighten one turn more. After done with the first eight valves turn engine over one full turn till marks line up again. Then adjust exhaust valves 2,5,6,7 and intake valves 3,4,6,8 the same way.
- Q:i just replaced the head gaskets on my 1991 Acura Legend and When i put the timing belt on somehow it slipped and came loose I than tried to start it(not knowing it came loose) and it cranked hard and strong but no start. - It really depends on the age of the recipient. Mechanical valves last much longer but require blood thinner treatment for life to prevent strokes which has risks and is a pain and most would like to not take blood thinngers. Biological made from pig and cows and cadavers mean people can go back to their lives with no blood thinners. But, they wear out and last depeding around 10-15 years. Most do not want another open heart surgery. It is a conversation between the surgeon, cardiologist, patient and family. A young person, the no-brainer is mechanical if they can maintain blood thinner compliance. An older person would want a tissue valve with less chance of outlving it and requiring another openheart surgery. And perhaps at an age where the surgery wouldnt be done. So the best choice is based on age and what the patient wants. Arnold Schwarnegger chose a tissue valve even though it will wear out before he dies statistically and require a replacement but he didnt want to be on blood thinners. Putting a tissue valve in a 20 year old, then replacing it at 35 with another, then again at 50 and then at 65. Doesnt make sense and the scar tissue from it all. If that doesnt make sense A mechanical valve in an 80 year old and then the risk of a blood thinner and bleeding issues doesnt make sense either. Hope that makes sense
