- Q: I spilled Coca-cola on my area rug. The rug is relatively inexpensive and I've never spilled liquid on it. I decided it would be a brilliant idea to sop up as much liquid as I could with a towel and paper towels and then pour baking soda all over it, which I then proceeded to rub in. (I know, idiotic). The stain is now hard and crusty and I cant seem to vacuum it out. Any advice?
- Not all is lost. Break up the crusties as much as possible and vacuum, probably just use the hose, not the various heads. Keep doing this until you'd removed as much as possible. If you have a clothes brush, use that to help as you vacuum. When you've done as much as you can, time to switch methods: first put a towel, shower curtain or whatever under your throw rug as you don't want to ruin the floor under neath.......if vinyl.......relax. Anyway. Make a solution of OxyClean.....I'd say a scoop to a quart of warm water.....mix well and then apply it to the stain.........if your carpet doesn't have latex on the back and you can move it to the tub.....pour the Oxyclean over the stain. Otherwise pour a bit on.......1/4 cup or so, rub with your fingers and immediately begin blotting it out with a clean towel......white or light colored just in case you get a color run from the towel. Repeat applying and blotting it up. That should do it. I doubt you'll need the whole quart. OH yes, finish with a clear water rinse and plenty of blotting. Check the towel or whatever underneath and replace it if wet. Let the rug air dry. No hair dryers as heat will set stains. Of course we hope like anything the OxyClean doesn't remove the color from your rug.....if you have bright colors.....use a weaker solution. OxyClean ihydrogenen peroxide which will bleach colors if in a very concentrated formula which it in the in the original mixture I mentioned.

- Renting a rug doctor's the best way to go, commercial quality equipment without having to buy it. Otherwise the bissell proheat series is good. Hoover not so great in my experience....

- You're using it as an adjective, a six-foot rug. It'll be easier to give more examples than to describe the rule. A drive of ten miles is a ten-mile drive. A baby that weighs eight pounds is an eight-pound baby. A building with six stories is a six-story building. Etc.

- Hopefully you aren't rubbing at it as this will further get the pigment into the carpet fibers. Try letting the carpet cleaner set on the stain for a little while and then blot it up with paper towels. If the color is transferring to the towels, it's working. Repeat until it is gone. If it still won't come up, tell your mom what happened when she gets home and explain you've tried cleaning and it won't work. She's a mom, so hopefully she'll know what to do. And of course, if you don't like honesty, you could always rearrange your room to cover the stain.

- Nail polish remover will get the paint out from the carpet. But, to what expense? The acetone will de-laminate the top of the carpet from the backing of the carpet. Which will make a wrinkle in the carpet. Plus the acetone will dissolve the padding under the carpet. Use a small amount of paint thinner on a rag to remove the paint from the carpet. That Acetone will totally ruin the carpet. Stop using it.. Where Finger Nail Polish Remover was used to remove Paint on the Carpet clean up the residue with dissolved laundry detergent like, maybe Roma Laundry Detergent. Roma works great. Do not get the area on the Carpet too wet. After cleaning off the residue from the Carpet, dry the Carpet with clean white towels. Not by rubbing, but by putting the towels on the Carpet and stepping on the towels until dry. Clean up the residue from the Paint thinner and dry in the same manner..

However we just found out that the carpet is GLUED down and therefore a much bigger project to remove it than we once thought. - No, vinyl will stretch in the traffic area and or crack. In a short time there will be pockets or puffed up parts. remove the carpet and install lauan plywood properly nailed. Over this you need a sealer mastic for cracks and such. The vinyl will last a life time with out cracks and such. Tough pulling up the carpet, it should be pretty good under this. There are some chemicals to help with the glue. After the floor could be covered with the fake wood tiles. It uses a floating foam cover to help with any problems below. Cost less than vinyl and prep.
