no the only time you will get any benefit from changing the exhaust is when you change the whole thing. the manifold is the most important part that's where the pressure issues start by fitting a 4 branch manifold you will allow better gas flow and reduce hot spots. unless you are thinking of doing allot of modifications i wouldn't change anything as a proper exhaust system an be very expensive if you gust want to make the noise than change the back box but that is all you will get no power improvement from doing so.
Q: For my 2002 gti 1.8L 4 cyl My buddy says to find a full exhaust system for around $500/600 bucks, because they will give better performance or something like that. I found one on amazon for $150 then one on O‘riely that‘s like $490, they both kinda look the same but I want good quality, i also found some for like $999, and I can‘t spend over $500 on one. Some one tell me what‘s the difference and what should I go with? Thanks
I tend to go with FACTORY(as they bolt on and the holes match the studs VW Research Development Department tends to have more money to do best exhaust configuration Research than any custom exhaust garage. VW is no different than Chev or Ford (those are the companies with the money) so they do the research on every motor style. Then they choose the best one for that engine. Which would make sense; right? Otherwise they guess with every vehiclewhich is ludicrous. Sure, some clown with a pipe bender can make you an exhaust manifold and weld it up and spray paint it white or black or chrome But, they do not say invest $12,000 or more in designing it. They do not have the money nor the test faucilities to do that. They just bend pipe and weld it.and paint it. Theirs just makes more noise. Difference? Price. and advertising But they do not have the proof to back up their claims.
Q: I have a 2010 Lancer gts and I‘m goin to be buying a greddy catback exhaust system for it alone with a test pipe to replace the cat and also headers. Has anyone ever used greddy and can you tell me what you think? I‘m lookin to get some power increase and a lower grumble sound not a ricy sound.
first off DO NOT put a test pipe on a N/A car, you will get reversion which will HURT power not help it, but more on that later. The Greddy systems are nice and deep as long as you get the higher end models, like either the Ti-C, or Evo2. The SP systems are really quiet and sound almost like stock. The header is a good choice as long as you don't skimp. Now back to reversion. I will try to explain it as simply as possible. Your cylinder moves up an down in the engine block creating exhaust gases to expel out of the exhaust, as this is going on you have a push/pull effect on the air it is making. The catalytic converter helps trap gases from being sucked back into the combustion chamber keeping negative pressure (reversion) from filling the combustion chamber decreasing efficiency at which the fuel is burned, now keep in mind that your engine is sometimes going 6,000-7,000 RPM per minute meaning several strokes per second. On a turbo car the turbo actually acts the same as a catalytic converter because the impeller cannot spin both back and forward at the same time. This is where a high flow catalytic converter comes into play. This would be your best choice.

CAT back refers to a new exhaust beginning with a performance more free flowing catalytic converter and also a more aggressive sounding muffler. Cat back just means ur buying the whole exhaust system from the catalytic converter to the tailpipes.

It's possible to engineer an exhaust system that will make your car faster. But 1) You can't buy one off the shelf. Most aftermarket systems are cat back, and produce little or no improvement, and a lot more noise. Anyone who's ever built a serious performance car will tell you that it's the first thirty inches of the exhaust system that makes the most difference. 2) You can't install a set of high performance headers without doing other work on the car. The car has to be thought through as a system.intake, motor, exhaust, etc in order to get any improvment. The very last thing you monkey with is the exhaust.

Your first answerer, caused me to write this. He must work for a dealer. You can have the exhaust replaced and worked on anywhere. Sears, Midas, and other independent exhaust shops can do it for you cheaper than any dealer can. Plus, in this economy, everyone will not turn away a potential sale. One thing that you cannot do, is get rid of your catalytic converter permanently. That is US EPA 100% illegal. Now as to sound, you can do anything you want. Yes, some communities have noise ordinances. I once had a vehicle where I also had a very loud exhaust. I did get a ticket. Took it to court. Won my case because, a Harley is so much louder than my truck ever was.

Was the exhaust designed for that car or are you having a custom setup fabricated? Almost any muffler shop SHOULD be able to bend up and weld a half way decent exhaust system. When you buy an 'exhaust system' they can be designed to specefically fit certain makes and models. One size DOES NOT fit all if this is the answer you need.
