We do not have any sort of inspection here in Michigan, so I was wondering if I could just do a straight pipe all the way back instead of adding the converter and then just add the muffler and tailpipe. Thanks in advance.: Not going to work. The computer 'tunes' the engine based on the O2 sensors that are sniffing the gases in the exhaust system. Without a cat, the exhaust gases will read as having too much extra fuel, which is what the cat would normally burn, so the computer will 'lean out' the engine to get the unburned fuel levels within spec. Also, if you ever try to sell it, it's illegal to sell a car with any of the federally mandated pollution or safety gear missing or not working.

An exhaust system is really only utilized when other performance parts are added like an ECU tune as well as a cold air intake or high performance heads. Also, most exhaust systems don't do much because no1 bothers to do exhaust headers, which are the most important part in my opinion. Your only as good as your weakest link. As for your question, the companies both make good quality stuff. Magnaflows seem to be a little quieter but have a very nice tuned sound. Flowmasters are a little louder (talking 40 series here) and a little more raw sounding. Either is an excellent choice. For trucks, i like the flowmaster 40 series. I hear good things about the 80 series as well. You can always Youtube the mufflers and i'm sure someone has taken a video of a truck like yours with those mufflers. It wont be great sound quality, but it might give you an idea. If your doing this, it'll be for sound, nothing more. If your expecting more power you are going to be really disappointeded.

Q: i have a 97 avalon and want to replace the whole exhaust system. what kind of system would i get? is there a basic exhaust system kit for cars? or do i need a special system for the avalon itself? the manifold pipe is rusted out and the rest is in pretty bad shape. just want to replace the whole thing and not have to worry about any other parts rusting and having to listen to the obnoxious exhaust leak: Any muffler shop can handle this replacement. Drop by 2 or 3 for estimates.
