- Q: how is a tall crane constructed? how can they put the crane on top of its tall body frame?
- They first construct the top of crane on the ground with help from other mobile cranes. This includes the long horizontal part with the operator's cab, and the concrete counterweight. this is then placed on a climber, with which the crane kind of builds and climbs itself to the necessary height. Every vertical section of the crane is placed in the climber. When the piece is in place, the climber climbs to the top of piece from where the next vertical piece is placed and so on. - Q: how do they get counter-weights onto high cranes?
- The crane itself hoists them. Suppose a crane is rated to support X tons, then the optimal counter weight would be X/2 tons, an the crane has to be designed to support an imbalance of X/2 tons. If the operational crane is not lifting anything, then it has to support its unbalanced counter weight, and if it lifts its maximum load, then it has to stand an unbalanced load of (again) X/2 -- the other half of the load is balanced by the counterweight. Therefore the crane is capable of hoisting its own counterweight as an unbalanced load. It is then secured in place and the crane can then start operating to its rated maximum lifting capability.

- That depends on the load the crane needs to lift. Those cables will vary from 1/2 inch to about 2 inches. The cable is composed of individual strands, woven together, with a fiber core. The core allows the strands to move, such as flattening out as they move over the pulleys. The core also carries the oil needed for lubrication. The cables are usually rated at 1/7th of their real capacity for safety reasons.
